A quick circuit of Gowbarrow Fell before the rain came.

For the last day of our mini break I had big plans to do Skiddaw from the cottage, the weather had other ideas  The forecast for Tuesday was rain early on, brightening up around 11:00am before more rain in the afternoon, so, what to we do? We had time to have a wander up Gowbarrow Fell, the vi...

Re: Blencathra via Doddick Fell

Nice report. A great route up a great mountain. I've often mentally followed the ridge up while passing in a car or bus but have never actually climbed it. I'd imagine it would be a good option when visibility is poor as well. Blencathra can be surprisingly confusing in the fog and I've managed to ...

Blencathra via Doddick Fell

Out of all the mountains and fells in the Lake District I think Blencathra is probably at the top of my favourites list, there's so many ways to gain the summit most of which are interesting and a couple are testing too  We've visited the summit on quite a few occasions using the popular and ...

Re: Souther Fell, easy does it for our first hill this year!

Yes, it was a pity about the weather, we'll go back in better conditions and hopefully puddleless, it was a bit soggy underfoot  We were looking at High Rigg on our way to the circle and thought it would be a nice walk from this direction, might give it a go some time :D

Cheers

Souther Fell, easy does it for our first hill this year!!

We had a few days booked in a little cottage on a farm below the slopes of Blencathra, with it being our first break this year we were hoping for some nice weather, I had a few walks planned, for good days, bad days and in between days. We haven't been out in the hills this year so, in our imaginati...

First day out for a while and it was all white.

We had a little break booked mid-week, I've retired, well, from full time work, I may look for a part-time job in the spring, Denise works part time so hopefully we'll have a bit more time to do this sort of thing :D Weather watching we saw there was a fair bit of snow forecast for the southern lake...

Re: Howgills wander to blow the cobwebs away

Yes - as you say a nice quick walk :D I've done it multiple times - when I didn't feel like anything more enegetic. Can't ever remember meeting anyone on it. :D I think the northern edge of the Howgills is a lot quieter, the good thing is you can access any of the more popular tops without too much...

Howgills wander to blow the cobwebs away

We had to get out into the fresh air, a recent event in our lives had made us want to escape the normality for a few hours. A trip to the Howgills was long over due, a simple outing we were familiar with, easy access and very quiet :D Weasdale is a nice little spot, we've had a couple of days out in...

45887 steps, It's a long walk but it's a good day out.

Beinn Dearg was the second munro we wanted to tackle during our weeks holiday in Newtonmore. I had read reports where people had done both Beinn Dearg and Carn A' Chlamain in the same outing, that was a bit beyond us so one a day would be more enjoyable. The forecast for Monday and Tuesday was okay ...

Walking all the way isn't that bad, you know!

We had a little lodge booked in Newtonmore for our final holiday to Scotland in 2023. This break was designed to get a couple more Munros done before the winter and a rest after a busy few months :D We'd been thinking about doing Càrn a' Chlamain for a while, a bike would be handy but not having any...

Re: Completing the Wainwrights with odds and sods.

Congratulations Sgurr, we've really enjoyed reading your reports. The Wainwrights are varied and enjoyable hills to walk over, your reports and photos really conveyed their appeal, thank you for sharing your adventures.

Cheers.

Morven, a nice end to a weeks walking in the Cairngorms

Our final day in Ballater, according to the forecast, was going to be a bit of a dampener especially in the higher Cairngorms north of Braemar, we'd wanted to do Derry Cairngorm and Beinn Mheadhoin from Linn of Dee and return down Glen Derry, but, with the forecast giving out heavy rain overnight an...

A Carn Bhac Circular

We had one munro left to do around Glenshee, it seems to have taken us ages to get to this point having first visited the munros around the ski centre back in 2014. Carn Bhac, for some reason, had become the "one on its own" for us, I had thought about combining it with An Socach but chick...

A nice walk by the River Dee

This is a nice walk made even better because it starts close to the cottage we had for our week in Ballater. It's quite a long walk, the first half heads towards the suspension bridge at Cambus O' May through the woods on the south side of the River Dee and then follows the NCN195 cycle way back to ...

Craigandarroch again

Another walk around Craigendarroch, we did a variation of the WH route last year which didn't do it justice, we took a wrong turning, we carried on to the right instead of turning left   so this time we made sure we did it right. The WH route is longer than our version and has some really...
