Ben Nevis - a hike in clouds

July 3, 2019 Hiking Ben Nevis was my plan from the moment I started planning to walk the West Highland Way a year ago. It was going to be the perfect end to the Way. My heart was set on doing it via the CMD arête. Since my hiking buddy Sonja wasn’t able to do it with me I was hoping to maybe meet so...

Re: WHW - The Adventures of a Wo[a]ndering Academic(s)

Congratulations on completing    . Thank you Nick. Yes, Sonja is much better now. Thanks for asking! The doctor said it was a case of a very bad sprain. As I said, she’s much better now and already training for next summer. We are thinking the Alps… I was little bit surprised that...

Re: WHW - The Adventures of a Wo[a]ndering Academic(s)

For the future, to help avoid blisters you might want to try 1000 mile socks. I've never had blister since starting to wear them a few years ago, even when walking whole days with soaking wet feet. Thanks for the sock recommendation! I’m using Bridgedale merino ones, have been for over a year, and ...

Re: Novices on the CW trail-an epic adventure

Thank you for the great report. I quite enjoyed it! I finished the West Highland Way and the Affric Kintail Way this July and like you, I’ve started looking at the Cape Wrath while I was planning for these two. I’m hoping to walk the CW in the next two or three years (I still feel I need to practice...

WHW - The Adventures of a Wo[a]ndering Academic(s)

WEST HIGHLAND WAY, June 26th – July 2nd, 2019 This was my first multi-day hiking trip in a long time. I’ve been thinking about them for a while and last year decided to finally make it happen. First I tested myself on day hikes – first on was Ben Lomond and continued to train throughout the year. An...

Re: A Night Hike through Brdy, Czech Republic

Just shows that there are crazy people in all countries.... :D Indeed. Though, who defines what's "normal" and what's "crazy"?  Your countryman Mr Dakota is a good example of the latter - as you will see if you read his reports :D[/quote] Perhaps. Or perhaps h...

Ahoj and thanks! The night photos were each kind of a surprise as I saw absolutely nothing on the camera display that was completely black.

A Night Hike through Brdy, Czech Republic

On Wednesday afternoon my facebook beeped at me with an event invitation: “Join us for our annual night hike through Brdy. Meet up at the Prague main train station at minute to midnight this Friday.” That sounded intriguing. My country got a generous amount of fresh snow just the week before, but un...

Fløya (almost) and Nattmålsfjellet, Norway

Most of my conference travel means 99% of work and maybe 1% of playing tourist. It’s usually get in, present, listen to other presentations, get out kind of thing. But I was lucky in October 2018 to be part of a small conference/workshop at the University of Tromsø, which took place on Thursday and ...

Moody moors walk: Duncolm and The Slacks

Two days after I hiked Ben Lomond, I ventured out for another adventure. Originally, I wanted to do The Whangie, but there didn’t seem to be a reasonable public transportation that would take me to or nearby the hike. The only option was to walk from Mulgavie for about 2 hours to just reach the Quee...
