Re: Hill fitness

Does anyone remember doing any training at all for their first Munro? A few of us decided in the pub to do Ben Lomond one weekend, early 40s, I maybe went for a a short (under 2 miles) run once a week but no hills. Felt hard but we got to the top.. I've been to the Ben Nevis summit a few times on su...

Re: The North Face

The North Face course is "Intended for those who work and operate in the outdoor industry including brands, organisations, coaches, instructors and volunteers" so we might see ads or social media posts promoting diversity in the outdoors as a result. If the company is going to spend their ...

Re: The North Face

If North Face want to do something that encourages minorities out onto the hills, then good for them, and I don't understand why anyone would take offence. Yeah, that seems obvious to me too. Scotland is 96% white with most diversity in urban areas so in the Highlands it's closer to 99%. If seeing ...

Re: B1 vs B2 boots for winter mountain walking

My understanding of having the climbing zone area is to enable scrambling on rock much more easily. Don’t tend to be a feature of winter boots, but have it on my Scarpa Mescalito GTX boots l use most of the rest of the year You're the man to ask then - have you found it makes any difference to scra...

I've employed lots of people where we have either internal sign off or qualifications from another country.

I was really talking about an individual without qualifications who was offering guiding services. What kind of guiding do you do?

Re: Oh Dear...

I stand corrected - an AALA license is only a legal requirement if working with under 18s. If someone not appropriately qualified were to describe themselves as a mountaineering instructor or a mountain guide then the Association of Mountaineering Instructors or British Mountain Guides might take a...

Re: Getting started with snow hikes - courses, routes, kit?

UpAndDownMountains wrote:The context here is we're on Walkhighlands, and to me here a grade means a route description grade

Worth noting that the WH grades aren't widely used, even on these forums. More common grading systems with numbers are for summer scrambles and Scottish winter climbing. Enjoy the course!

Re: Getting started with snow hikes - courses, routes, kit?

Oh I'm not doubting the value of the course as a whole, my question is about what will I learn that would make me better placed to choose the right boots, crampons, ice axe. That depends on the individual course so it's really a question for the course provider, but this is information you can easi...

Re: Getting started with snow hikes - courses, routes, kit?

Crampons - The included ones are 10 point but I see everyone recommends 12 As above, 10 points would be ideal for winter hillwalking. I'm not sure what I could learn about these on the course that I couldn't by reading. I've never been on a course but I'm sure some people get some value from them, ...

Re: B1 vs B2 boots for winter mountain walking

Would B2+C2 be safer for walking? Most of the winter Munros I did were with stiff B0 boots and Go Outdoors crampons - no problems. I've currently got B2 boots for climbing but wear 10 point C1 crampons if it's just a hillwalking day because they're lighter and have shorter spikes so they're more st...

Re: Technology and do I need to be careful?

Just to be pedantic, 'technology' would include printed maps and compasses as well as electronics like GPS devices, mobile phones and headtorches. The weak link is usually human decision making when cold, exhausted, distracted etc so the more sources of info you have with you the better your chances...

Re: Car park closures Glencoe

I think the reckless & culpable charges were issued because the fixed penalty notices for covid breaches came to an end so the walkers couldn't be given the usual £30 fines. They weren't following the guidance, but the police couldn't charge them with this so they had to come up with something e...

Re: Car park closures Glencoe

The current inquiry seems to be highlighting how chaotic the whole decision making process was. Hopefully this will be the greatest threat to outdoor access that any of us experience, but it's disappointing that representative bodies like Mountaineering Scotland didn't do more - they're based in Per...

Re: Car park closures Glencoe

The NTS post that Gammy Leg Walker linked to at the start of this thread says the A82 already is a clearway "throughout the Glencoe area". I didn't know that, and I've never noticed any signs, but it seems to have been true since 2021: I remember there were problems with people stopping t...
