Re: Advice on Cape Wrath Trail with a dog....

Hello Kate, I did the CWT in May last year with 20kg of spaniel. Depending on your route you may find some 8ft high stiles over deer fences which could be an issue if trying to lift a 33kg dog over the top bit. There is one on the Heights of Kinlochewe, after Meallan Odhar and before the glen south ...

Re: Black Diamond poles- Experiences?

Hi Nathan, I have the Contour Elliptic poles - don't think they make them anymore but they have been completely reliable, very strong but light and the flicklocks have never let go despite some serious abuse. The flicklocks on these poles are adjustable for tension to accommodate wear over time. I c...

Re: Cape wrath - MOD

Be warned though - last year it said no bombing in May, I got to Richonich to find an MOD notice on the pub door saying that there would be shut on Monday - 12th of May - my day to get to the Cape. The only guaranteed way of knowing is to ring the minibus driver a few days beforehand - 01971 511 284...

Re: Walking Boots - am I over thinking things?

Hi, As others have said, you cannot try on enough different boots and you may well end up with something you never considered or have even heard of. On that note, Go Outdoors and Millets are ruthless in only stocking boots that they get a good deal on. I don't know where you live but there are [lent...

Re: Long Distan Trail with my dog

Hi Scottishgrieve, I did the CWT last year in May with my springer. He ate his normal dried food but three times a day instead of his normal two. I sent his and my second weeks food to Kinlochewe PO. He carried his own like the previous poster. I will try and load a picture but it never seems to wor...

Re: Cape Wrath trail 2014: video log, reflections and FAQ

Hi Peter, This is a sorry tale - after 24 hrs of trying to watch your film I have got as far as 7 mins and 6 seconds! I have given up on my ancient computer in my office and have tried on two daughters fancy laptops but still no joy. We simply have rubbish broadband but I'll get there in the end.......

Re: Cape Wrath Trail : alternatives and weather conditions

Hi Kervin, I have started from both Fort William and Glenfinnan and Glenfinnan is a much nicer beginning because you are in the hills straightaway. Starting from Fort William means a very boring walk out of town and then another boring slog along the Caledonian canal, probably in the rain. Depending...

Re: Re shoding my boots

Also endorsing LSR - in my experience they can almost make a silk purse out of a pigs ear.

Re: My Hollys Last Walk

I have just shared 13 days of the CWT with my springer. Reading your poem made me cry. I am so sorry.

Early days I know but maybe there will be another.

Re: Best wild campsite...

Sandwood Bay in early May this year. Special because we had the magic of the Bay to ourselves and also because, sadly, this was our last night before the Cape.........

Re: Access to Gairich?

Probably not much use to you but I crossed the dam on the 3rd of May. It was a gamble on my part as my impression of the dam from the north side, the previous year, was that it would not be possible and I expected to have to climb over high gates etc, with a dog. But the gate was unlocked and no pro...

Re: Supplying Cape Wrath

Hi,

Very quick response - Kinlochewe is good but remember the post office is only open fom 9 - 11 am. You can post parcels to hotels and bunkhouses. Oykel bridge would be a good one, Inchnadamph if you are going that way. Kylesku also though you are nearly there then

Re: Drygarn Fawr from Abergwesyn

It's great up there - I have never seen it in the sun! I really recommend Dolgoch Hostel shown on your map. We go there every October halfterm and even between Christmas and New Year once, so as you can imagine it is always cloudy and wet. A great area for walking - we don't normally see any other p...

Re: First trip to the highlands

Hi Nicki, Nice to hear of another 'deep South' walker going to the Highlands. I live in the New Forest and am going up to do the Cape Wrath Trail at the beginning of May, also with a dog - only one though. If you are only day walking, I would have thought you would be fine with your current set-up, ...

Re: How tough is the Cape Wrath Trail?

Hi, There is really no comparison between the West Highland way and the Cape Wrath Trail. The CWT is not a marked trail and there is no defined route and in some places, no path at all. The only definite is that you must start in Fort William and finish at Cape Wrath. The CWt requires considerable p...
