Re: Ben Challum (more or less!!)

I feel a bit better - having missed out on the last bit of Marsco - or 'Almost Marsco' as we now call it! - at Easter.. As an unfit 50-something who walks (as in long/ hills) about once every two years I was reasonably pleased. 14 year old son was happy to carry on but, thankfully, didn't mock his d...

Re: Skye Advice

How time flies...!

Did Bla Bheinn - my one and only Munro so far! - at Easter 2010 with Paddy McGuire. Apart from being very aware of my general lack of fitness(!) and slightly tricky navigation it was great. Going again this Easter and will walk up Marsco for the views. Otherwise family hikes!

Re: Skye Advice

Thanks for the input all. Think I'll try a couple of 'hills' with other - more experienced - people first! It's difficult to know what to expect - might try a 'simple' route and find it a nightmare, could try something allegedly harder and find it a breeze.

Re: Skye Advice

The next post however just confirmed the impression that this site is for people who take not only their hills but themselves rather too seriously.. YES, I am taking myself and the hills (on this occasion) very seriously. The second post by Caberfeidh seems to give the impression that the Cuillin a...

Re: Skye Advice

I'm sure you'll be fine on it, weather permitting. Guides for walking is a daft idea. That's what maps are for. Time it so you have plenty of daylight; set off early , don't rush it and eat well. Also remember to take some water, it's like a desert on the tops.I'm sure someone did a post on climbin...

Skye Advice

Our family have spent several Easter hols on Skye 'walking' rather than anything more strenuous. Long and tiring routes but nothing requiring 'clambering'. Son and I going up to the Old Man of Storr is about as extreme as it got! There again at Easter for a fortnight. Can I (50, strong but not parti...

Re: Approach shoes

I have 'clunky' old leather boots for ages. An old Merrell pair and a pair of Hi-Tec, bought as a temporary measure while the Sky Cobbler in Dunvegan glued the bl**dy sole back onto one of the old boots! Although neither pair get much use, the Merrell pair are comfortable, very supportive and great ...

Re: Rannoch plans

Done! Though for what it is worth (we have the threatened AXA-funded Kent International Gateway/ KIG on our doorstep!) I have little faith in the impartiality of the planning authorities... and even less if/ when it goes to a government planning enquiry as ours has. Just like the Clearances when peo...

Re: any interesting abandoned villages in NW Highlands

There are the ruins of dwellings and signs of former habitation and cultivation all over the Highlands. The circular walk via Boreraig and Susinish (and the marble quarry) on Skye is good. Also walk to Dalavil (Sleat) through the woods is good - described in Craig's book. Fascinating subject. http:/...

Re: any interesting abandoned villages in NW Highlands

The Highland Clearances and the history of the Scots who 'left' for 'the New World' have been a big interest for me for twenty years. One of the best books to read is David Craig's 'On the Crofters' Trail - In search of the Clearance Highlanders.' Stunning and sad. Also describes some interesting wa...

Re: TIME TO VOTE: Best pub in Highlands

I agree with Kevsbald, some are just popular for their location. The ambience is what you really want in a pub. The Clachaig has the location, but the Kingshouse has the ambience. Another one surpisingly lacking climber ambience yet in a spectacular location is the Sligachan. I guess having the kid...
