Re: Ben More via NE Ridge (Cattle-free)

I've considered this approach - not to avoid the cattle but for my pal who hates an unrelentingly steep ascent. But now she's set on going up and down from the bealach which sounds from your description less boggy? Apart from the boggy bit your route sounds good though. 8) Dunno if the bealach appr...

Ben More via NE Ridge (Cattle-free)

I wanted to do Ben More with my two Beagles and was concerned about running into cattle if we followed the standard route up from Ben More farm. Someone in the forum suggested trying an alternate route up via the NE ridge, and I'm happy to report this was not only cattle-free, but also I suspect muc...

Re: Ben More - likelihood of cattle encounter?

Perthshire Ben More. There is also the NE ridge which avoids the farm. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/329670 Just saying thanks again for this suggestion. I did this route yesterday with the dogs and it worked a treat. We encountered a deer, some sheep and a couple of foxes in the dark on the way...

Re: Ben More - likelihood of cattle encounter?

I remember going up from the North side with my two wonderfully behaved dogs. No Cows. HOWEVER, on the way back, the field was full of cattle a lowing with calves afoot. It was a nerve racking walk through between them. Because I am seriously feart of them. Despite having done the two Munros I felt...

Excellent - thank you! This looks very promising - a good compromise route and the dogs will love the forest section.

Re: Ben More - likelihood of cattle encounter?

Thanks everyone - I'll check out the south approach then. Letting two Beagles off lead is not an option!

Ben More - likelihood of cattle encounter?

I'm considering doing Ben More as my next hill this season together with my two crazy Beagles, probably in the next fortnight. The only thing that concerns me is that I've seen some photos of cattle in some of the walk reports, which would not be good (the dogs would be on lead throughout but are gu...

Re: Osteoarthritis of the Knees

I know this is a bit of an old thread but I've just spotted it. All is not lost. There is SO much misinformation about OA - from charities, doctors etc. The trouble is, all research and info is based on little old biddies that haven't got off the sofa in years. This is something I've researched at l...

Re: Lost Dog - Arrochar

Good news. The dog has been found. As far as I can gather it was in the early hours of this morning that it returned to the car park. Fortunately someone had gone up to wait there. None the worse for wear.

Lost Dog - Arrochar

A friend lost her dog today whilst walking the Glen Loin Loop near Arrochar, Loch Long, last seen at 5.20pm. The dog is a 10 year old Sprollie - picture attached. The owner is searching until dark then resuming the search at first light in the morning. As you can imagine she is distraught. The hill ...

Wild Camp on Ben Narnain

We climbed Ben Narnain overnight on Sunday hoping to get some cracking sunrise photographs from the summit. We weren't sure how long the climb would take, ended up getting up there an hour before sunrise and it was so cold that by the time the sun finally did come up the dogs (our constant companion...

Re: Sunrise from the Summit of the Cobbler

It was nice to meet you! The Beaglets are enjoying their celebrity status  We had a cracking camp out on Ben Narnain - I'll get a walk report up in due course. What a change in weather from a few days ago!

Re: Dog friendly walking

Good topic! It's a huge issue for us too. I wonder if WH would consider a thread just for reviews of the 'dog friendliness' of various walks if a few people have these concerns? Our Beagles are onlead at all times simply because they would be 10 miles away from us following their noses in minutes if...
