Re: Keto / low carb - high fat diet & walking

Absolutely no reason why a keto diet can't be followed whilst hiking, multi-day or otherwise, as long as you are already reasonably well adapted for fat burning. Many elite ultrarunners follow low carb diets without apparent performance penalties

Re: Leaving gear behind while summiting

I too have left my backpack (again, usually at a bealach) many times. Including in Lochnagar/Glenshee which attracts a reasonable number of more casual walkers. I've never had any issues. However , that's not to say it will always be the case, especially somewhere like Ben Nevis. I would personally ...

Re: Glen Doll update May 2022

Whilst the trails are marked as closed, and it is worth noting that for some they will not be passable due to the fallen trees, no attempt is being made to prevent anyone from accessing the trails. The car park was open (and busy) and the ranger on site we spoke to was offering advice on the potenti...

Re: Glen Doll update May 2022

I went up Mayar and Driesh on Sunday and, although all trails are marked as closed, they are passable, with some fallen tree hopping required (especially on the way to Corrie Fee).

Speak to the ranger on duty at the centre and they can advise on routes, etc.

Re: Dog GPS tracker

We use Tractive trackers for our cats at home. They are very effective, but, as noted above, rely on the unit having a mobile signal.

Some brief Googling suggests that full GPS solutions are available, but aren't cheap

Re: Runnable Munros Near Lochcarron

I think I'd like to stick to Munros as I have very limited opportunities to get up to Scotland (live outside London) so every bit helps towards completing a round. Will keep Sgorr Ruadh and Beinn Liath Mhor under consideration and see how the legs are feeling. The short drive is an obvious bonus and...

Runnable Munros Near Lochcarron

Hi All, I'm staying in Lochcarron for a week later this month and in addition to an overnight loop of 9 of the Kintail Munros (Beinn Fhada to Sgurr Fhuaran), I'm hoping to get in some quick early morning ascents (back before breakfast/brunch to keep the wife happy). As such, I'm looking for munros t...

Re: Ideas needed for Gluten Free meals

malrc I'd completely forgotten about biltong, droewors and absolutely love Nougat. Reminds me of the times up in the 'Berg. You wouldn't happen to know a good source of biltong/droewors in the Perthshire area at all? My wifes vegetarian which makes me mostly vegetarian too :-) Any of those dehydrat...

Re: Ideas needed for Gluten Free meals

I'm gluten and lactose intolerant for my sins, so plenty of experience with this. There are a LOT of great snacking options! Some good (weight-efficient) ones that haven't been mentioned already include: - Biltong/jerky/droewors i.e. 'dried' meats - good for snacking - Salami/cured meat i.e. 'wet' m...

Re: Garmin InReach mini or...

After a recent circuit of Mullardoch, I intend to purchase an InReach mini for my next trip as phone reception was non existent for full 3 days. This is one of the more remote parts of Scotland however and I agree with many that in most cases satellite Comms are not needed. The InReach is for my wif...

Re: Climbing mountains/hills in Isle of Skye

Blaven is fairly straightforward in terms of munros. I highly recommend one of the Quiraing circuits for a more general walk.

Re: Multi Day Hikes from Fixed Wild Camp

Fisherfield and the Cairngorms are the obvious two, you're limiting yourself a bit if you have to return back to your fixed camp location though. If your gear is light enough, you should still be able to move fast enough. 8) I have my pack weight pretty low, but ultimately, with camping gear and fo...
