Re: How did you first take to the hills?

Quite by chance my job took me up my very first mountain, Shanlieve in the Mournes, in 2010. Although I've always lived less than an hour's drive away I'd never climbed any of the mountains in my (almost) 50yrs. Whilst the circumstances around being there weren't particularly pleasant, I thoroughly ...

Re: Aladdin's Couloir

Had a quick scout this morning and it answered any questions about whether to do it or not. Chock full of snow and no-one anywhere near it. The top section especially looked dodgy! Can't see the snow consolidating by tomorrow. By comparison Jacob's Ladder had several groups tackling it or at least t...

Re: Aladdin's Couloir

As luck would have it, on stopping in the Mountain Café enroute to our accommodation, the very same Heather Morning (see earlier post) was in the shop and gave some very useful advice about current conditions. As of a few days ago the gullies in Coire an t'sneachda were all plastered in the white st...

Re: Aladdin's Couloir

 do not fear, I have plenty of winter climbing experience including grade III in Torridon but that was with a guide. I've done plenty of solo stuff in the summer but nothing in winter. Just fancied a crack at something relatively simple if conditions were right. I have all of the SAIS reports f...

Re: Aladdin's Couloir

Thanks for that jmarkb. I will have the appropriate climbing aids and safety gear but only attempt it if conditions suit. I've been following the weather and avalanche reports over the past couple of weeks. I seem to remember Heather Morning (Glenmore Lodge) telling me during a winter skills course ...

Aladdin's Couloir

My annual trip to the Cairngorms is upon me and, as a departure from my usual munro bagging outings, I'm tempted by Aladdin's Couloir. Whilst it may be on the easier end of the winter climbing grades I've no desire to be availing of Mountain Rescue....or worse! In short, and obviously assuming the w...

Re: Conditions on Braeriach and Macdui?

Thanks guys, I appreciate you taking the time to reply. I totally understand the reluctance to give a definitive answer to this type of question and ultimately we're responsible for our own actions. Having shared this and other info from the staff at Glenmore Lodge with my friends, most of us are pa...

Conditions on Braeriach and Macdui?

Re a previous post about best direction to do the Braeriach Traverse, out trip is only days away so the question is, can anyone advise on conditions on the summits? Is there much snow, is it frozen, should crampons be put into our luggage? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated....as always

Re: Braeriach - Cairn Toul Traverse

Apologies for not responding sooner to the latest replies. The info supplied has been great and although opinion is divided on best way to tackle it (all for very sound reasons) it's given me plenty of food for thought. The maps have been out and studied thoroughly. Ultimately the weather will deter...

Re: Braeriach - Cairn Toul Traverse

Few reasons for doing it on the first day Prog99 and having a few drinkers in the group is one of them 8) I reckon I can persuade them to take it easy on the night of our arrival but both nights  ! Having said that the weather forecast ultimately will be the decider on which day we do each rou...

Re: Braeriach - Cairn Toul Traverse

Not really an option Sunset as we'll be staying in Aviemore and logistically we couldn't manage it. The other fellas in the group are all Munro/Cairngorm virgins so ascending via Braeriach first at least gets them onto the third highest mountain in Britain and Ireland, which they are all keen to do....

Re: Braeriach - Cairn Toul Traverse

Yea good idea Perr. Given that we may be at different levels of fitness that could be an option for some....or all of us if things are getting tight.

Re: Braeriach - Cairn Toul Traverse

Thanks fellas, good info in both posts and either way I know from much reading that the Lairig Ghru and Chalamain Gap are unique  I'm the only one in the group who has been to the Cairngorms. Come to think of it I may be the only one who has been to Scotland  The others have plenty of ...

Braeriach - Cairn Toul Traverse

A group of us (nine) are heading over (from NI) to Aviemore at the end of May with the sole target being the Braeriach - Cairn Toul Traverse...in a day! Having read many of the trip reports on this site it appears that the favoured direction of travel is Cairn Toul to Braeriach. Any particular reaso...
