Re: Romans and Reivers Trail: 3 Bellshaw Pool to Garwaldwate

I think it should be OK. The route was designed to be used by walkers, cyclists and horses though I Recall thinking it would be tough for a horse rider in some parts. It is quite some time since I walked it but most of this section is on forestry track or road. I really don’t recall if there were ad...

Romans and Reivers Trail: 3 Bellshaw Pool to Garwaldwater

This, our third Romans and Reivers walk, took us from Moffat Dale to Eskdale, passing through the valleys of Wamphray Water, Dryfe Water, and Garwald Water, and past the half way mark for the entire route. The first three miles or so are a gentle climb, the second three miles a gentle descent then s...

Romans and Reivers Trail: 2 Kinnelhead to Craigbeck

We took up the walk again where we finished the last section, where the forestry track carrying cycleway 10 crosses the Earshaig-Kinnelhead road. Looking west along the road gave us a view of Queensberry that had been denied to us the previous week by low cloud. This is the road described in “Routes...

Romans and Reivers Trail: 1 Ae to Kinnelhead

The plan was to drive a car in from the Kinnelhead Road at the north of Ae forest to the Blue Cairn, giving us an 8 mile walk, but that plan fell at the first hurdle when we found a gate barring our entrance to the forest. We were forced to leave the car there (NT041018) and have a longer walk (12.5...

Re: Craignell and Darnaw’s Dragonfly Monument

wjshaw2, I agree with you about Cairnsmore of Dee, same unpleasant tussockness. I was using walking poles when I did that and it claimed one of them (bent beyond repair) when I toppled into an unseen hole. All part of the experience though.

5.8 miles 4h 30m ascent 340m Route: Quarry SE of Clatteringshaws, Low Craignell, Craignell, Darnaw, Dragonfly Monument Then we set off again over two very desolate hills that have for names, as Sammle told me, Craignell and Darnaw. Re: The Cold Hill

jaffa61,

Well done on getting to 78 Donalds. You seem to have left some nice hills for the last few. They should certainly be nicer than the Moorfoots, though I happened to do them when the boggy ground was frozen so they weren't too bad. Mike
