Re: Feedback requested: 3-day route Cairngorms

The route is doable HOWEVER do not rely on the Corrour & Hutchie bothies having sleeping space, both are small & can be very busy, there’s often a cluster of tents around them for this very reason…….CARRY A TENT.

Re: Bhran Cottage

Personally I’d opt to walk S to Gaick Lodge & then head W, ford the river & climb the good stalkers path up Sgor Dearg before cutting across the boggy plateau for circa 2km to descend Corrie Chuaich…..straight forward enough, I’ve done a few times. Second option would be your option 2, again...

Re: Red house bothy

The building is a protected historic monument & as such the renovation had to adhere to the imposed strict conditions. The East gable (with unused lum) was in fact is serious danger of collapse & it would have been far more straight forward to simply tear it down & rebuild. However due t...

Re: Mini simple gps

The smallest dedicated GPS device is probably the discontinued Garmin Geko 201,
They do come up occasionally on eBay,

Re: Winter cooking stove

I use alcohol stove throughout the winter as there's little to go wrong but getting an efficient setup needs a bit of research (pot/ stove compatibility, good windscreen, etc) & familiarity. The only time I use a gas stove is when I anticipate needing to melt snow when I dig out the Kovea Spider...

Re: Pacer Poles

... after a long day I found the fleshy heal of my hand and pinky joint getting sore...bashed and bruised I reckon. . Can't say I've had any issue in this regard, perhaps you're hanging onto the grip too hard ......The other issue was my thumbs got bloody cauld in the driving wind /rain as they sit...

Re: Braeriach to Corrour Bothy any way down

I’m planning to do this route this coming Tuesday with an overnight camp somewhere. Was planning on biking to Derry lodge then tackling Devils Point and working my way around the others from there. Would an overnight camp prior to or just after doing Braeriach be a good option ? Then walk back thro...

Re: Braeriach to Corrour Bothy any way down

I've descended & ascended 'Dukes path' many times & it's pretty straight forward. From the cairn just off the main path down the Sron na Lairige (~NH965002) just follow the zigzags down into Coire Ruadh where the path it peters out, resist the temptation to continue straight down & head ...

Re: Lairig Ghru Braemar to Aviemore directions.

I respectfully suggest that if you can't work it out for yourself from the OS map that you shouldn't be there.
Even in summer it's not a walk in the park, rough going in places with the potential for poor weather.

Re: Grisport boots

Got a pair of Peaklander's for working around the farm rather than wellies. They look well made, reasonably light & they fit my wide feet. Well worth the £75 I paid for them & got a free daysack & a pair of socks!

Re: Import Duties

This site https://www.simplyduty.com/#calc is pretty good at estimating (exchange rate may change the actual value on the day) the any import taxes for goods from the EU or elsewhere, there'll also be a handling fee added by the delivery company of £8 to £12 (in the case of Royal Mail its £8). There...

Re: Unbending a walking pole

Bending of aluminium alloy CAN leave invisible micro cracks, a pole may survive straightening & last a life time or may snap unexpectedly if overloaded again......life's a risk.

Re: Trail Runners vs Lightweight Mountaineering Boot

Just go with the trail runners & pack a pair of plastic bags (bread bags) to wear over your bed socks in the evening so that possibly wet shoes can be worn around camp.
