Re: Cairngorm Munro Planning

I did Ben Avon, Beinn a Bhuird, Beinn a Chaorainn and Beinn Bhreac as a bike/hike. I left the car at Linn of Dee, cycled to Invercauld bridge where I dumped the bike. The walk was 27 miles and took 10 hours 40 mins, can't remember how long the cycle took, but probably about half an hour.

What animal predates deer (apart from posh people with guns)? Could anything have just chopped off a leg?

Re: personal locator beacons

Sorry, didn't think to check on the gear section, I only browse the discussion and walk reports sections, so didn't register there was somewhere to talk about equipment. I've had a look at the thread and the consensus seems to be it is a personal choice, they obviously won't work for someone knocke...

Smoking in bothies

www.heraldscotland.com/news/16862012.hillwalker-dave-monk-says-smoking-ban-loophole-ruining-bothy-experience-after-children-saturated-by-fumes/?ref=mr&lp=20

I hadn't realised the smoking ban doesn't apply in bothies as they are classed as private dwellings. Has anyone had any issues with this?

Re: Advice on the Lawers 7 please!

I did something similar, starting where you suggest and climbing Meall A'Choire Leith first. It took me 8 hours, about 25k, with 2400m ascent.

Re: Would you abandon your best mate?

I only know here what I’ve read online. Apparently a Mr #### from #### abandoned his 12 year old collie on Beinn Sgulaird when the collie collapsed. The quote from #### family was “he was forced to put his own survival first and leave the dog behind.” The dog did not survive. So a couple of questio...

Re: The Maidens of Doom

Ouch, hope you make a speedy and full recovery. Well done to the MRT for their response The consequences of not having a signal are unthinkable  After a heavy slip when, for a minute or two, I wasn't sure if I could walk out unassisted, I invested in a Spot satellite tracker. Worth the cost i...

Re: Getting ready for the SNT

Hi David, A couple of suggestion for things you don't have on your list. A tick removal tool, and a torch. As mentioned earlier a hot drink or meal is a nice treat when wild camping, so a stove would be on my list. 50' of rope seems like overkill to me, a bit of strong string would be adequate imo. ...

Re: Dog friendly walking

I climbed Ladhar Beinne from Mam Barrisdale with my dog last year. There were a few bits of hands on stuff, which I would probably barely have noticed if I didn't have the dog. The dog was fine on the ascent, but I decided to take a longer return route via Mam Suidheig, as my dog is less confident d...

Re: Mountain hares in the Lammermuirs

They even venture as far south as Lauder high street, probably attracted by the stunningly low prices.

Re: Arrochar Alps round - advice please

I've not done the route you describe, but in July I did a round of the 4 munroes. This worked out at 17 miles with 8275ft of climbing (according to my gps), which took me 8 1/2 hours. It was a warm day which slowed progress a bit.

Hope this helps.
