One of the other things that I'd recommend is to buy an os map of where you were brought up and see if it's changed. Small things like rivers and fords change, don't bet on what you see on a map.

Yep. I was taught using an old os map at ground level. Between a post office and a pub via a large field and a loch. And using a compass. As the wo/man says, learn/practice.
