Re: Who wears / takes a helmet when walking?

I do, I took one into the Cuillin in Summer when scrambing alone, and during winter were there's a risk of slipping and tripping. Glad I was wearing one in the alps walking, I tripped and dove head first down a small ledge. Landed head first.

Re: Gaiters, up to the knee length

Gaiters are disposable objects to me. I've torn mine with my crampons countless times, had the elastic drawcord at the top snap and the buckle for the under foot strap tear off. I've gone through extremities, Tresspass, Trekmates types and the Trekmates have lasted the longest. They've got the plast...

Re: Meindl Burma boots with crampons?

On my Alps trip, someone had really lightweight boots with them that flexed like trainers. They wore a 12point Petzl crampon with the double basket (classic) attachment system. They managed to frontpoint up a vertical ice wall in them.

You won't have any problems.

Re: Winter Hillwalking Gear

Cameron94 wrote:. The points are slightly shorter than the G12 which eliminates the feeling of walking on stilts.

False statement.

You don't even notice they're on your feet, even when walking on concrete. A little more elevated yes, but no more than putting a pair of boots on does.

Re: Camera which one to buy????

Are you looking for a compact or a DSLR (like the ones that pro photographers use) ?

Then, are you looking for a sturdy one that can take a few knocks and drops and be water/dust/freeze proof or do you want one to take the best pictures possible at the cost of being a bit more fragile?

I've got an ageing Canon EOS 400D with a SIGMA DC 17-70mm lens. On a day like that getting good shots is easy. Mother nature did all the hard work for me 8)

I need to get myself a decent wide angle lens. 8)

Re: Advice on ice axes & crampons

Tiso their own branded axe, actually made by Grivel (it's a Munro in disguise!) and in a variety of lengths, I have this as my walking axe, I even took it to the Alps with me in September and it was all I needed. For the walking axe, if you hold the head of the axe, and have your arm straight down b...
