Re: Oban Bothy in April?

I'm not sure why the MBA persist with Oban Bothy, when it's unavailable a big chuck of the year. According to the MBA website the opening times vary from year to year. Not sure what the thought process behind that is with the estate. :? I also wonder about this though I get the point Essan is makin...

Re: Winter sleeping mat

I have an Exped Synmat and get on really well with it, I find the lengthways baffles hold me on the mat much more securely when I move around, before that I had a Thermarest with sideways baffles and found myself rolling off it a lot. Exped do several similar looking mats with different R ratings so...

Re: The gore-tex vs. paramo debate

Have our expectations become too high ? Obviously nobody wants a jacket that lets rain in, but should we accept that we are not going to stay dry from sweat in certain conditions ? Do we need to adjust our layering systems better so that we can stay warm or cool ? Do we all get sucked into the late...

Re: Cheviots Done and Dusted

Great report and pics.

The old railway van looks like a Southern Railway van judging by the roof profile. A long way from its home railway but they soon ended up all over the rail network once nationalisation happened.

Re: Best boots for plantar fasciitis?

An aftermarket insole is going to be the thing to look at. Most walking boots come with a pretty flimsy insole (even the expensive boots) as they're such a personal thing that putting a "good" one in would push the price up and would probably still get swapped out by a lot of customers any...

Re: Lidl special

It's always worth having a look at any of Lidl and Aldi's sports offers. Buff style neck tubes appear quite regularly, not only in the ski range but black/hi-viz ones appear in the cycling range and camoflage versions when it's fishing week. Aldi did a Trangia style stove and pan set a few years bac...

I hope the culprits do the right thing and remove it themselves rather than someone else doing it.

Sale Fell

Decided to break up a journey from Kielder Forest to the Cumbria coast by climbing a hill with a friend. We parked just before the gate on the lane from Wythop Mill towards Kelswick. From there it was just a case of going through the gate, taking the steep path immediately on the left then cutting r...

Re: Children's backpack

Aiguille Alpine do a childrens size rucksack (The Mini Midi I believe). Not the cheapest but a great bit of kit hand made in the UK.

Re: ironing board

I wondered if a quick hunt on Instagram would find the culprit. :wtf: More than likely, if it was for some kind of charity fundraiser they'll almost certainly have some kind of presence on social media (instagram, facebook etc) or a fundraising website. Somebody dumped a distinctive hand shaped lea...

Re: Long distance walking - what's the equivalent of a munro

In answer to your question "How many more of us are there?" I consider myself more of a trail walker than a hill bagger, again bad knees are an issue and living down the wrong end of this island to be a hill bagger I started trying to complete sections of the Thames Path national trail onc...

Re: Looking for recommendations for grippy trail shoes

However, it seems that if you look at the reviews for almost any trail shoe, the complaint seems to be that they're slippy, regardless of the sole type! I used to work in the outdoor retail industry and have seen almost every type of footwear we'd ever sold be returned with the complaint that they ...
