Madeira's Best Hike - Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo

Cloud inversions at sun rise, stunning wild partridges (and their babies), fantastic views from start to end, and pretty flora; being told over and over that this was Madeira's best hike - it didn't disappoint! It was pretty gruelling in the summer heat and sun, but I'd highly recommend this to anyo...

25 Fontes (Madeira video walk report)

I visited Madeira in the peak of the summer season and research I did on the 25 Fontes hike seemed very split. Many people said it's not worth it because of crowds and would go on to suggest other trails they felt were better. As our trip was for 2 weeks, we figured we had time to try this, and the ...

Levadas Moinho and Nova (Madeira Island)

The Portuguese island of Madeira turned out to be a bit of a lazy hikers paradise. the Island is full of Levadas, like a very narrow canal that's almost flat, but these are built on the side of Madeira's epic mountains, so you have spectacular views and often waterfalls and lakes. This was the first...

Helm Crag, Gibson Knott and Calf Crag (Video report)

I adored our quick pit stop in the gorgeous village of Grasmere, and the gingerbread was delightful – the perfect treat for a hike up to Helm Crag. Once up there, we decided to keep going over to Gibson Knott and Calf Crag before coming down the valley of Far Easedale Gill. It was heatwave weather a...

Re: Walla Crag with a Slow Worm and Birds of Prey

Thanks Tim.

I loved this hike and day out in general, but agree that the slow worm was the highlight for me!

Re: Catbells - loved some elements and hated others...

Thank you for the tips tolkienabouthills. It's a shame as we've already booked for this summer again - but should heed your advice for a non-summer school holiday for future trips (as I know the Lakes will keep pulling me back!)

Walla Crag with a Slow Worm and Birds of Prey

My hike up Walla Crag last summer was amazing as we came across a couple of birds of prey, and on the descent, came across a slow worm and caught some pretty cool footage of it before it slowly slithered away into the undergrowth. We did a bit of blackberry picking as there were SO many along the tr...

Re: Catbells - loved some elements and hated others...

Hi Simon This is a fab suggestion. Thinking about it, when I was in the Lakes in 2018 with friends, one of them planned our route for Old Man of Coniston and we had the route mostly to ourselves until the popular summit and you're right, after the solitude, it's sometimes nice to have others around....

Catbells - loved some elements and hated others...

Last summer I hiked Catbells and was left torn in my opinion of it. I loved taking the Launch (boat) from Keswick to Hawse End to begin the hike, I loved the views and appreciated these rewards for not a huge amount of effort. I loved the lake shore walk to return and eating lunch on the jetty of De...

Re: Blencathra Via Sharp Edge

Thank you - that really means a lot to hear someone else say that. I thoroughly enjoyed the scramble section and am eager to do more scrambling during hikes going forward.

Blencathra Via Sharp Edge

On the August bank holiday weekend last year, I hiked up Blencathra - an amazing hike that I highly recommend. I know some people say the Lake District is too busy and crowded in the summer (and during our trip, we did experience some of that) but we only came across a small number of people on this...

High Force Circular - North Pennines AONB

I figure if you’re going to go hiking on a rainy day, do a hike that takes in 4 different waterfalls as you know they’ll be spectacular. I did just this in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as I chose to hike a 5-ish mike circular trail from Low Force, up to High Force and a coup...

Snowdon Via Rhyd Ddu in thick cloud (video report)

I hiked Snowdon early last June. My research hinted that 'd likely enjoy the Rhyd Ddu path the most, so off we went. Well, what a hike!!! We lost visibility relatively early on. The gales were intense, but it felt fun and like an adventure, coming across sheep through the thick cloud almost at the p...

Re: Hiking through disused quarries on the edge of Snowdonia

Hi Skyelines Thank you so much for sharing al of that. It's funny how as it was my first time visiting, I thought it was strangely freeing how you could wander most parts, but it certainly sounds like they've put up more fencing from when you've been in the past. The facts about the explosive store ...

Hiking through disused quarries on the edge of Snowdonia NP

Last spring, I went on a hike through some of the disused quarries on the edge of Snowdonia National Park - the old quarrymen's houses were especially fascinating. Lunch was enjoyed in Llanberis before heading back up the hillside to where we parked the car past the very cool looking Vivian Quarry l...
