Re: The Old Forge Community Ownership

As far as I can see, the possible bid is being promoted independently of the Knoydart Foundation which already has community ownership of the estate, bunkhouse etc. Which suggests there may be murky local politics involved. But when is there not with things like this? Knoydart is a small community ...

Re: Can I have a "P" please Bob - Scotland (2nd edition)

OK agreed! :) Over to you Sgurr... Thank you. One of my firsts jobs was as research assistant on this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Political-Change-Britain-Shaping-Electoral/dp/0333019555/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Butler+Stokes&qid=1614784764&sr=8-1, but it was a very, very long time ago...

Re: Name that Loch!

Loch Glass? Yep, the very one. Taken from the track on the southern side. Your turn :D Thank-you, I wouldn't have got it but for the fact that very recently I was looking at images on line for Loch Glass...for this thread (I was wrong) another week and it would have been lost in the misty reaches o...

Re: Can I have a "P" please Bob - Scotland (2nd edition)

Are the 2 others Clackmannanshire and Kinross and Caithness and Bute? Correct! To be precise, these three pairs of small counties were unique in that they alternated returning an MP at successive elections - they did not strictly speaking share an MP. Thus, for example, in the 1768 general election...

Re: Can I have a "P" please Bob - Scotland (2nd edition)

Is it to do with saints? Cuthbert and Kirkcudbright? Yes, but none of the other C saints were around at the same time when something big happened. I had toyed with Saint Conval and Barrhead, and St. Columba and Ness, but where is the event that sundered 2 for ever? I'll leave it to the quizmaster p...

Re: Can I have a "P" please Bob - Scotland (2nd edition)

All your Cs are villlages in old historical Scots counties. Coldstream is in Berwickshire, Catterline is in Kincardineshire and Clunas is in Nairnshire. (As you probably can gather, this is a fishing expedition). I am going to tweak Sgurr's reply and replace Coldstream with Cornhill in Banffshire,

Re: Can I have a "P" please Bob - Scotland (2nd edition)

For the following puzzle I've done searches in this and the older thread to ensure I don't commit my previous blunder of setting a puzzle that has already been set in the past! What was the common link between C and B , C and K , and C and N ? Don't worry on my account, I can't remember what I had ...

Re: Scotland's Watershed part minus 1, Tussocks and Thunder

I do admire your perseverance. I've never felt the slightest urge to go anywhere near those border hills, and your description and pics of tussockdom have not served in any way to generate even the hint of such an urge! I still fancy doing a bit of the watershed, but somewhere up in the North West ...

Re: Can I have a "P" please Bob - Scotland (2nd edition)

Total mystery to me. I was looking at historic local government authorities ( particularly ones that preceded Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire and Ayrshire Councils) and who they were twinned with but drew a blank. I wondered about bands or musical ensembles that had come out of single entities but my i...

Re: Name that Loch!

Told you it was easy. This was our first walk together for 2.5yrs!! The joys of a young family. Was lovely to be out. Over to you. Cheers, The Watershed (of Scotland) is basically the left handside sky line in your photo and I remember painfully hobbling down past the loch after 5 days of walking a...
