Re: Glencoe weather

I would agree that (late) May is best. April can still be snowy and it gradually gets wetter and midgier from June onwards, though June itself is usually quite decent too.

September is overrated in my opinion.

Re: Name that Loch!

I recognise it as somewhere I've been, but can't match the photo up with any satellite imagery.

Loch Carron maybe?

Re: Favourite walk of 2021? Why?

Favourite walk - surprisingly, Scald Law and the Kips in the Pentland Hills, having walked from the Edinburgh side during the January lockdown. Perfect Alpine conditions - sunny with fresh snow, and fairly quiet. Felt a real treat to be able to experience that so close to home. Least favourite walk ...

Re: Rising Damph

Deserves a Like for the walk report title alone

Still haven't been to Torridon. One day... though it's quite nice to leave it as something to look forward to!

Re: More bird ID help!

Mal Grey wrote:No2 That dark edge to the underside of the wing might be buzzard. How big?

No3 Not sure, but he's eyeing you up as a possible meal.

No. 2 - I would say smaller than a buzzard. And (though it's not obvious in the photo), it was more of a grey colour than brown.

No. 3  he was tiny!

More bird ID help!

Some more rubbish photos, this time from the glens west of Amulree, last month.

I'm sure no. 1 is a red kite - we saw several of these throughout the day. But the other two? (the last photo is a small bird - definitely smaller than a blackbird, for example)

Re: Walking While "ill"

An absolutely beautiful and very moving tribute, Sgurr. We've never met, but I've always enjoyed reading about you and your husband's trips (and other exploits, such as the bollard incident!). You are both an inspiration.

Thank you.

Re: Bird of prey ID, St Ninian's, Fife

Apologies for the late reply, and thanks for all of yours!

It was at St Ninian's near Kingseat. Former mine, now scrubby grassland, not many trees.

Re: Bird of prey ID, St Ninian's, Fife

If I recall correctly - a bit smaller than a buzzard?

I don't think it was a kestrel - I think I've got a fairly good handle on what kestrels are like.

Little egrets in August

We saw these little egrets (I think?) at the mouth of the River Wansbeck in Northumberland back in August - only just getting around to sorting through the photos. According to the RSPB website, they're usually only winter visitors north of The Wash - not sure what they were doing all the way up bey...

Re: Skye Trail Recommendations?

I tend to think of Scottish winter as running November to April. Spring and Summer is in May and then Autumn is June to November. I think that is a little exaggerate. You think? As someone who has visited Scotland many times in May, June and July, yes. Al, I think Nicky was joking! (although...
