I agree, Cul Mor. Do these look familiar?

Meall Ghaordaidh - deer stalking issues?

I know the main deer stalking season is over now, but am I likely to find any issues around Meall Ghaordaidh and Ben nan Oighreag (from Glen Lochay) at this time of year?

Re: Fide Coastal Path and the Scottish Outdoor Access Code

I doubt it's because you're not allowed to walk on the inland side. Could it just be because there's no easy diversion (e.g. because of cliffs, or because it's rough / overgrown / pathless)? I've walked the route but it was ages ago so can't remember the terrain properly. You could also look up the ...

Re: Kestrel? - another one!

Thanks! That's twice we've been up Dumgoyne and there's been a kestrel at the summit both times.

Re: Glen Tilt

Funnily enough I was thinking about this earlier today too. Upper Glen Tilt is one of those "mythical" bucket-list places for me - I haven't gone beyond the lower part. When I go, I'm planning to hire a bike and cycle up to Bedford Bridge and back in a single day (though I haven't properly...

Re: Scruffy red squirrel

Funnily enough, I came across this article before posting this topic. The months don't seem to match up but it was an interesting read.

Re: Scruffy red squirrel

Thank you both.

Hopefully not squirrel pox in somewhere so far from significant grey squirrel populations as Newtonmore.

Scruffy red squirrel

We came across this red squirrel near Newtonmore in the summer. It seemed to be acting normally but we couldn't help noticing it had a lot of discoloured or missing fur. Is this just normal moulting (it was early July) or was it ill?

Re: Easiest and safest munros in late october with children?

It's really difficult to predict what the weather will be like in late October - you could get anything from pleasant temperatures with light winds and sunshine, to driving rain, icy terrain or a little fresh snow on the summits. Statistically, it's the wettest time of year, and high winds and fog a...

Re: Assynt / Coigach - current midge status

Thanks all - some useful advice and also some amusing anecdotes!

We went across today - sunny, light winds and negligible midges (Rogie Falls, Ullapool, Knockan Crag, Cassley Falls). All good :)

Assynt / Coigach - current midge status

We're introducing family to the Highlands this week and might have an opportunity to go across to Ullapool / Assynt for a day. Probably somewhere accessible from the A835. I've heard a few horror stories about midges over the last couple of weeks - are they actually unusually bad or is it mostly jus...

Re: Where to avoid the weather this weekend?

Not quite sure what you mean by "north of the A9" - the A9 goes all the way up to Thurso on the far north coast.

The weekend isn't currently looking too bad - Friday looks like the wettest day, though exactly where the heaviest rain will be is still to be determined.
