Re: WH coming and going
If it happens again, can you possibly email me your ip address? You can find it by adding Google “my ip address” - it’s for numbers separated by dots. Email: editor@walkhiglands.co.uk You probably need to make a note as you won’t be able to read this if you can’t access 😊 I can then check that out s...

Re: WH coming and going
That's the only thing I can think of. Wonder if you both use the same IP?
Not that we've changed any DNS in years.

Re: WH coming and going
I'm not aware of any downtime at all. Currently rewriting all the area pages with the highlighty maps to newer code, so there's a chance you would miss one if I was uploading at that moment. But that seems pretty unlikely. Let me know if you find any possible reasons - sounds strange if it happens o...

Re: Rocketing Fuel Costs!
Just a heads up that we've had complaints about this thread: Petrol prices as part of how to reach walks is just about on topic. However parts of this thread have gone off into other political issues that don't have any real link - such as alcohol pricing. If we can keep things on the outdoors / wal...

Re: Boots vs trail running shoes
I prefer trail shoes, unless there's snow. Especially if there's any sort of path. They don't last as long as leather boots though (with few exceptions). I don't believe there is any scientific evidence that 'ankle support' from boots is a real thing (e.g. see https://www.reddit.com/r/AdvancedBackpa...

Re: Lossiemouth to Buckie - entirely or partially inaccessib
Sorry, the page description and photo - which describes and shows the new bridge! - had been updated as I visited the day after opening day to do this, but I hadn't removed the warning box. It's gone now. On the map, our blue route line shows the route going over the new bridge location (even though...

Re: How to scale print map from the site ?
Printing on websites is generally controlled by your browser - so you can just print from your browser - look in your browser menu for a print option. Print screen is also an option for those who prefer to do that. Scale depends on how far you have zoomed in or out, how large your paper is and your ...

Re: Download GPX of entire trail and PDF of all stages?
I'm afraid our GPX files are only available individually for each route stage. We have agreed with Police Mountain Rescue teams that you need to click on the agree to use a map link when downloading each one. Many browsers will let you print to a pdf file, but note that this is only for your persona...

Re: Best mobile network
By far the most extensive network across the Highlands is EE, which has very wide rural 4G these days. This is due to them getting the contract to provide the Emergency Services Network.
Vodafone is OK for phone calls but far, far behind for anything beyond that.

Re: Potential hacking: Bagging maps blank, plus dodgy leafle
There has been no hack of either Walkhighlands or of Leaflet. For people who don't know, Leaflet is the most popular and respected modern javascript opensource libraries for showing maps on websites. Leaflet was originally founded by a Ukrainian and they currently have a Ukraine appeal banner on th...

Re: Dalwhinnie Railway Crossing
You are best still using the walkers car park near the old crossing & station if not wanting to cause a problem for residents, then if wanting the underpass you need to walk back to the main road, turn right along it to the south, then right to head to the underpass, then right beyond the underp...

Re: How are times for walks calculated?
There's no calculation, as we try to give an estimate that allows for the difficulty of the terrain etc which is overlooked with calculated times - crossing rough boulders takes ages compared to going along a track, even if both are level. Similarly with bashing through heather vs walking across a b...

Re: Dalwhinnie Level Crossing - Network Rail piece, May 2022
Your help is needed! If you want to help with getting evidence together on it being a Public Right of Way, you can submit a questionnaire - and either a gpx file or a map with the route drawn on - to Scotways, who have evidence of it being used historically as a right of way but need evidence for th...
