Re: Blaeloch Hill

This is definitely on my list. Looks like a good combination of high start, good track and great views (as long as the pathless bit isn’t too long…)

Re: Moorfoot hills advice

There was this barbed wire fence (maybe new?) halfway up the first hill behind the castle. Actually ripped my trousers a tiny bit, so it must have been a bit of a height. The rest of the walk was good fun. Lots of signs about keeping dogs on leads.

Re: The silliest sign you've seen on a walk?

I remember seeing one by a bridge over the railway at Crianlarich which gave a weight limit of 3 tons or something, and thought it was optimistic to get any vehicle through the field and over the bridge. There's a "17T" weight limit on the thin path up from South Ballachulish to Beinn a' ...

Re: The silliest sign you've seen on a walk?

Every time I see a 'Coffin Road" sign it always makes me think of a bunch of suited and booted pallbearers standing out there with a coffin, a map and a compass going "Ah, right, it's this way, lads." Problem is, I can't remember where I've seen such a sign. They do exist and I thoug...

Re: Steep start - again

Ahaa, I've got flashbacks to the steepness of Andrewhinny Hill now. Hadn't climbed many Donalds at the time, so just assumed it couldn't be that bad (or maybe the 5m contours just made it 'look' worse), but I nearly had to turn back. Never seen steepness like it!

Re: Old railway paths usable?

There's also this thread, which asks about the Killin - Crianlarich railway route.

The Worst Win

Beinn a Bheithir (15km 1297m 7hrs 15mins).gpx I should have known. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53243293427_a7bc32da1d_b.jpg My alarm goes off at 6:30am, jolting me out of an unusually uncomfortable sleep. Staggering through the hallway and down the stairs (past an enormous bath that reminds...

No Hurt Groin on Beinn na Sroine

Beinn na Sroine (3.39km 446m 1hr 57mins).gpx For almost a month I'd been plotting my last big hillwalk of 2023. I was on 68 Munros overall, and eight for the year, so was desperate to climb two more to round it up neatly to 70 / 10. Work has been very busy and I kept having to postpone it, but even...

Re: Beautiful (but long) walk out of Alltbeithe to Morvich

Oh I remember that week, I was on a family trip based in Roy Bridge and going around Skye / Loch Ness / Glencoe etc. The whole week was absolutely cloudless, except for one night coming through Glen Shiel when some random cloud seemed stuck to the Munros on both sides. I wondered if the Five Sisters...

Re: Public Transportation after Ben Chonzie

Dochertys Midland Coaches do some services around Killin / Comrie / Crieff / Aberfeldy. It's primarily just the school run, but the return legs sometimes appear on the Traveline website e.g. returning from school at 9am, then heading back in that direction at 2pm. I don't think Citylink do a Perth t...

Re: Beinn Mhic Chasgaig: Best Current Approach

I came from the ski centre and the two Munros onto the East ridge of BMC, then down the North ridge to the river crossing. It was an awkward crossing (but then I've got almost no experience of that). The North ridge was ok but the river was fairly wide. https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopi...

Corserine? Course I Will!

Corserine plus 4 (21.13km 1135m 6hrs 52mins).gpx Previously on my #ThreeWeeksOfFreedom hillwalking odyssey, I had been through a rollercoaster of emotions in the Moorfoots on a rare Friday night climb https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=120615 . It had a little bit of ever...

Re: Best food on the A9

In July I stopped off at Khan Baba's in Pitlochry (it's part of a Premier Inn / Post Office on the main road). It's one of those places that just does everything now (curries / pizzas / kebabs / burgers). Maybe my view of it is skewed because I had just finished a rare double hillwalk and was utterl...

Re: Longest line of sight

Off the top of my head there have been two days where I've got genuinely long-range views (i.e. well over 100km). In 2010 I climbed the Lowther Hills, and they're a great choice for a high pressure day. I'm sure I saw Ben More and Stob Binnein (c.120km) but I didn't have a great camera at the time (...
