Re: Another thread about......

The one item of hillwalking clothing that I don't think I'd be without is my Rab Vapour Rise Light Alpine. It looks and acts like a jacket but it's really a midlayer on amphetamines. Micropile inner fabric with a Pertex outer means that it'll wick sweat away when you're working hard, but the shell f...

Re: Little Town octet, a Newlands double horseshoe

hey simon, looks like you got a great day for this "horseshoe" I did the same walk, in the opposite direction, in April. Very enjoyable :D Thanks mamoset. I'm not surprised someone else thought of combining these hills like this, whichever way round. What a great horseshoe. I did the majo...

A what tent question

I'm on the hunt for a tent that'll do a couple of jobs reasonably well, whilst remaining relatively cheap. Budget is around £100-150. First job: wild camping. I want to take my missus and kid wild camping. Only fairly fair weather stuff, but still up high so a reasonable amount of weather resistance...

Re: Single man tents

I'm not sure about the bivvy and tarp option being all that much lighter - I've been experimenting with an Alpkit Rig7 and Hunka XL recently. Combined they're about a kilo, then you still need pegs and guy lines, plus you need to take at least one walking pole, which I wouldn't always do. I think a...

Re: Waterproof trousers

I find Craghoppers trousers fit badly, the crotch/gusset hangs too far down (no puns please) which restricts movement, particularly when ascending.

Alpkit have just brought out a pair of overtrousers, maybe worth a look:

Re: Best sleeping mat

I used to use a 3/4 self inflating mat but kept slipping off it. Now use one of these . Also at http://www.multimat.uk.com/store/products/superlite-air. Granted it needs to be blown up but it's very light at about 330gr, full length and the tubes direction means I don't slip off so much. Only probl...

Re: Best sleeping mat

Define, "best." Is weight, comfort, pack size or warmth your priority - or are you looking at the fairest compromise from those options? If you can live with a shortie the Neoair XLite ticks most of those boxes - it's very light, warm, has a small pack size and is very comfortable (the fir...

Re: Windproofs Review

Through a season of named storms and snow it was brilliant. . This is probably the first use of this weather terminology for a season. Love it! I will be using it next year "I survived a season of named storms," or more likely "It was the season of named storms that really kept me of...

Re: Windproofs Review

Their loss I suppose, group tests guide a lot of people. And there aren't any reviews that I can see of their new Featherlite 7 (48g...I thought 100g felt like nothing!) Although paying an extra £1 per g loss vs. the competition isn't going to appeal for those searching for value for money.

Re: Windproofs Review

Enjoyed that, and for me the Patagonia looked like the sort of thing I'd love (if I could ever stretch to Patagonia prices.) I think this will be the first year I'll incorporate a 'simple' (as opposed to softshell, the VR Lite Alpine in my case) windproof to the stable having picked up an Inov8 wind...

Re: Down fill power

I would hazard just more of it? Fill power=how effective the down is. Bigger number means more effective down. Fill amount=how much down there is. As with synthetics, the more insulation the warmer it'll be. So if you've got 300g of 650FP down in one jacket and 400g of 650FP down in another, the lat...

Re: OS Map Subscriptions

The real bonus though is that i can plan and plot a route on the OS site, save it, then export the gpx file to my laptop. From there it's the usual simple procedure to send it to my Garmin GPSMAP64 ..... on which I have OS 50K mapping preloaded .....and I'm ready for navigating. Hope this helps You...

Re: OS Map Subscriptions

Absolutely, but MRT's have been using Viewranger for years so it's not a bad backup.

Just to clarify though - I don't think the OS maps subscription works with Viewranger, you have to buy VR maps separately.

Re: Handheld torch advice

Those 9 little LED type torches are a bit outdated now. When you can comfortably get 200 real lumens (not Chinese/eBay lumens) from a single AA or 900 lumens from the lithium-ion equivalent (a 14500 battery) the Tesco-esque 'lets fit as many small LED's into a small space' approach doesn't really ke...

Re: Jacket

There are hundreds of different insulated jackets available. Some are direct competitors, others do different jobs, all make different compromises to meet their intended target audiences needs. I own three different insulated jackets with various filling types (down/Primaloft/proprietary insulation)...
