Easains in the sun and snow

Easains-2024-02-26.gpx After a drive of 3 hours 20 minutes, I was ready to set off from the parking area at Fersit at 10:35, stopping for a chat with another walker who was going to do the two hills on the east side of Loch Treig, which I did a couple of weeks ago. I'd felt the beginnings of a ches...

Wintery western Fannaichs

Fannaichs-west-2023-11-15.gpx The weather forecast was promising and I parked in a layby already containing 3 cars, setting off on the walk at 9.10 am. There was more snow on the tops than I'd seen yesterday from the car. The temperature was probably at about freezing point for most of the walk, an...

The Drumochter round plus one

Drumochter-2023-10-23.gpx The forecast - over-optimistic unfortunately - was very promising, for sun with moderate wind, possibly starting to cloud over late afternoon. I was more concerned about the effects of the heavy rain from storm Babet in the last few days, but surprisingly the walk didn't t...

A long walk with amazing views

$matches[2] The aim of the walk was to do the 2 Munros and their 5 tops, plus possibly Tom Dubh as well. After a 2 hour drive to Aviemore and then a fairly lengthy drive down Glen Feshie to the good sized car park at Auchlean, I set out on the hike at 9.45. The forecast was promising, but the initi...

Re: A moorland walk among more moorland (and bog)

Hi there, here is the german woman who is walking in sandals and hi-vis 8) I love walking in sandals it's so much easier, it is good walking when your feet are strong enough. I would go barefeet if I could  I didn't expect to meet you again at the last cairn where all six of us got together fo...

A moorland walk among more moorland (and bog)

$matches[2] When I arrived at 10am after an over 2 hour drive, there were still traces of cloud on the tops, but they soon cleared and it turned out to be a better day than forecast - warm with sunny intervals, and little wind. I started in my summer boots up the good track along Glen Banchor. I'd ...

Ben Vorlich and the Little Hills from Stuckendroin

$matches[2] I drove from Edinburgh, where I was staying, taking a bit over 2 hours. There was plenty room for parking on the verge opposite Stuckendroin farm, although mine was the only car there. As soon as I started kitting up, I realised with dismay that I'd somehow forgotten to buy food and wat...

5 hills, and a big dip into Lairig a' Churain

aChurain-2023-06-20.gpx I failed to find a Coop for my usual sandwiches on the drive, so instead got food at the Handy Shop in Comrie. Their filled rolls were stuffed to say the least, so I certainly didn't go hungry on the walk. I reached the unsigned turnoff to Auchessan at 10.30. The verge of th...

Circuit of Loch an Daimh

$matches[2] This was my first outing after recovering from a stomach bug which kept me out of action for a week. After reaching Aberfeldy and stocking up with sandwiches, it took a full 45 minutes to drive the single track road through Glen Lyon and up to the Giorra dam at Loch an Daimh. I finally ...

Beinn Bhrotain & Monadh Mòr, return by Loch Stuirteag

$matches[2] The forecast was for low cloud first thing, lifting above the tops by the afternoon. So setting off from Linn of Dee at 10.30 seemed the ideal timing. If only ... The cycle to White Bridge went fine. $matches[2] After that, it was a stony path along the Dee with lots of drainage channel...

Geldie Lodge and beyond via road works, by non-mountain bike

I wasn't too sure how my bike would do for cycling to Geldie Lodge, en route to Càrn an Fhìdhleir and An Sgarsoch, since descriptions indicated that some of the track was quite stony. My bike is a hybrid, not a mountain bike, so it is less able to cope with stones. But from past experience, it seeme...

Re: Lawers 7, returning by bike

That can be the advantage of splitting up a walk - you should manage to get good views at least once, whereas doing it in one go is a bit more of a lottery. But I'm happy to have avoided the need to descend to Lochan nan Cat, which always sounds the hairiest bit in the standard Lawers range walks.

Lawers 7, returning by bike

The Lawers circuit would be a long day, so rather than do it all on foot from Glen Lyon in the north, the best option seemed to be to do it from the south using a bike. This would reduce both the walking distance and the height to descend. l.gpx I had walked the Tarmachan ridge the previous day, so ...

Beinns Mheadhoin, a' Chaorainn, Bhreac from Linn of Dee

Rather than do just the standard pair Beinn a' Chaorainn and Beinn Bhreac, why not add in Beinn Mheadhoin as well, which I'd seen from the other side of Loch Avon last week doing the Bynack More/Saddle/Cairngorm circuit. Mheadhoin-2022-08-11.gpx I set off from Linn of Dee just before 11am by bike, o...

Mullardoch 4, a great ridge, return by bog

I'd arrived in Cannich the previous evening after climbing another hill, too late to buy provisions. This meant I had to wait for the Cannich shop to open at 8am, delaying the start of the walk until 9am. Mine was the only car in the car park, so I wasn't to see anybody during the whole day. It was ...
