Re: Hill fitness

I think there is an element of truth in 'the only way to get fit to do hills is to do hills' statement - or at least it is probably the best way to stay fit for them. I live in Kent and although there are a few classified hills they are firmly in the wee bump category. I certainly felt the lay off f...

Re: Five Hills from the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, Langdale,

Not sure how I missed commenting on this, but great report. I've yet to do Esk Pike and Great End. I seem to have left a lot of the big ones till last :(

Re: The incredible power of awe - Sgor Gaoith winter summit

That was an absolutely stunning report and photos. Really good to hear that you are now properly on the mend. Like you, I took up outdoor swimming during the pandemic although in my case for reasons closer to mental rather than physical health. It's brilliant for both mind and body. I've not done a ...

Re: When hillwalking becomes an addiction

I guess other than the impact on relationships, a situation where a hill walking addiction becomes problematic is when it leads to questionable decisions. For example going out on a really bad weather forecast 'for the sake of the tick' or going up something you are not sure you can get back down. T...

Re: Lake District: Steeple

A nice report. I've yet to do this one and like you am not at all sure I can hack the exposed ridge to/ from Scoat Fell (which I also haven't yet done). My tolerance for that sort of thing has got worse as I get older too.

The route up you did looks steep but okay - nothing sketchy or scrambly?

Re: When hillwalking becomes an addiction

Very interesting topic. Whilst there are undoubtedly huge positives to getting into hill walking there can be negatives. I originally did most of my walking with my other half but now mostly walk on my own - which involves going away either with him or on my own as I live in South-East England. It w...

Re: Angle Tarn & Rossett Pike from Old Dungeon Ghyll

I did this in February - Rosset Pike is a nice spot. Didn't do the swim though. Looks a good place for it!

Re: Completing the Wainwrights with odds and sods.

No idea how I have managed to miss this report and obviously already knew from messaging that you had finished them. As others have said you are an absolute legend and it was a privilege to accompany you on one of your last 40. Here's to the next list though you have more than earned putting your fe...

Re: A week of blazing June from Patterdale

Nice report and a bloody good effort given the heat. I was up during that heatwave and walking was hard work.

Nearly there!

Re: Five Hills from Keswick

Good report and good effort given the conditions. Seathwaite Fell is one which is high on the to do list combined with a swim in Sprinkling Tarn.

The bracken is a total pain at the moment. Got soaking wet legs on my last walk :(

Not many left now :)

Re: Advice on Walkhighlands and other websites

Totally agree with jupe about Facebook. Some of the stuff on there beggars belief. I think the things which bug me most are questions like what is the weather going to do tomorrow in location x (er, look at the forecast) how easy is hill x (one person's piece of cake could be someone else's brown pa...

Re: Long way for a swim: Lochan Fada from Kinlochewe

Nice report of what looks like a great swim/ hike - even if the loch was rather cold! I guess it was pretty high up though. I've been swimming in quite a few lakes in the Lake District this year and the temps are really variable.

Re: Beinn Eighe or Beinn Alligin - What's Best for My Partne

Another option, albeit with some pathless terrain, is to descend NW from Sgurr Mor on Beinn Alligin, and head round past Loch Toll nam Biast to regain the path to the east of the Horns. I would second this. I don't have a great head for exposure either and did not fancy the Horns. We went up Tom na...

Re: Are environmentally friendly hill trips getting harder?

Another recent factor for doing hills by public transport has been the proliferation of both train strikes and engineering work. I do most of my hill walking in the Lake District and for a variety of reasons (long drive too knackering from the south east to do for just a weekend, bad experiences wit...
