Re: Ice free summits?

It is frustrating waiting for the snow to clear, seems to be never ending this winter! I'm waiting until the snow clears before getting back on the hills, but a low level hike tomorrow is on the cards You can count on the fingers of one hand the years when you could expect to go up a munro in March...

Re: Perth - Dundee: North bank of the Tay walking routes.

I couldn't say for certain at that end. I did walk it once as part of a new year pub to pub from Perth to Dundee but the memory is hazy.

The walk was organised by the Carse of Gowrie group. If you contact them they can perhaps advise https://carseofgowrie.group/

Re: Perth - Dundee: North bank of the Tay walking routes.

The Powgavie start does indeed cross a field and requires quite a close skirting of a house. Depends how bold you feel. You can enter the field to the north if you dont want to go so close and loup the fence. You can expect cows in the field too but it's a lovely quiet walk, I'd be amazed if you met...

Re: The North Face

If its not obvious to you why going into an environment dominated by another dominant culture and where you stand out might be intimidating maybe the course would do you good. If its the same dominant culture that run the society in which you are marginalised, vote for racist reactive governments an...

Re: Walking the length of the Tay

There is actually an official River Tay Way, not launched / official as yet. It doesn't stick by the river all the way though; it will also end at Perth. We've the first stage up on Walkhighlands here: https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/perthshire/kenmore-aberfeldy-tay.shtml Soon after Aberfeldy it wi...

Re: Monster Cairngorms walk - Route planning advice

If I was doing 8 days and the weather gods are with me then id tempted to head out to White Bridge from Braemar and get up and over to Beinn Bhrotain and Monadh Mòr. Lots of good high camping up there. You could even leave your tent to grab Sgòr Gaoidh and Mullach Clach a' Bhlair before packing up a...

Re: Monster Cairngorms walk - Route planning advice

I'd hesitate to say easy, it will be big days but it's quite a natural route. I have done everything as described below but not in one trip. I also like to get down low of an evening if possible but if you like a high camp you could shorten/lengthen these days. I'm not going to say they aren't long ...

Re: Resistance training, improving fitness for hiking event?

If you can one 8 hour day you can do a dozen. Yoga would be a better use of your time than cardio.

I'd concentrate on core strength and strengthening quads and glutes to help with those end of day descents to minimise injury.

Re: Beinn a' Bhreacaidh

The use of Gaelic (or English) isn't meant to be a historical exercise in deriving the origin of place or landscape names but giving equal status to a living language in use by people in Scotland today. Norse and Pictish derived names have been adopted into both Gaelic and English and so the Gaelic ...

Re: Beinn a' Bhreacaidh

Aye, the Leòdhasaich are the biggest speaking group left and they are also the biggest whingers.

They are all vikings anyway, Perthshire is the good gear.

Re: Beinn a' Bhreacaidh

The best thing would be to have the OS data sheets Unfortunately the OS is not always an objective witness on these matters. It's Ireland not Scotland, but see Brian Friel's Translations Neither objective nor accurate but they were good at recording different forms of names before settling on what ...
