Re: Small but Feisty: the rugged little hills of Flowerdale

Some superb photos of what is our own back garden. We've been walking these hills between Gairloch and Loch Maree for the last 4 years since we moved here. A fantastic mix of rocky little hills, crags and lochans. Pathless except An Groban and the walk in. We've never met anyone once beyond the path...

Re: Love in the air and good food - but lost way in Flowerda

Hope you enjoyed the boardwalk to the beach. Mark & me and Stuart the Church of Scotland ( wee white church) minister spent a day clearing it of encroaching sand and grass last summer. Spent the day in gloves and midge net which I foolishly took off when returning to the car park - and got bitte...

Re: Linear backpacking route and crossing the Flowerdale For

Frequently walk this kind of terrain (live in Gairloch). Generally find the going hard work and slow but not impossibly slow. The main problem is finding spots to camp which are not tussock grass or heather or bog. An actual grassy spot on the flat is a rare thing (the photo of Poca Budhie shows a r...

Re: Flowerdale the back way - Meall an Doirein from Loch Tol

Jmarkb Difficult to avoid heather / tussock grass and (particularly) tree holes from the 2.5M trees planted here in 2005ish, 90% of which failed leaving a 1/2metre square hole 40cm deep filled with water! Just after the recycling centre (leaving Gairloch) there is a field gate hidden in the undergro...

Re: Flowerdale the back way - Meall an Doirein from Loch Tol

This is our back yard, living in Gairloch. We've probably stood on 90% of the rocky bumps between Gairloch and Loch Maree and never seen a single person other than on An Groban. It's endlessly fascinating visiting all the lochans and crags over the rough pathless terrain. We did camp on the summit t...

Re: Baosbheinn from Victoria Falls

Yes, slow and constant concentration on where your feet are going. But it's the kind of walking we do here so we're used to it. But 2km an hour is often about all we manage. The view is fantastic and changes all the time with the weather.

Baosbheinn from Victoria Falls

We've been living in Gairloch for a couple of years now. Baosbheinn dominates the view from our house and I have it as my favourite mountain on my Walkhighlands profile. But I have never been up to the top so it was about time we made the effort. It's very easy to make excuses not to do something an...

3 Flowerdale Miniatures

We had originally intended to camp on Sunday night while walking from Sheildaig (Gairloch) to Torridon but a number of factors - recent experience with ticks, transport problems at each end and a deteriorating weather forecast caused us to opt for a shorter walk instead. We had intended to explore M...

Re: Walking While "ill"

A very honest, moving portrayal of the extraordinary determination and fortitude of both of you. Your intrepid adventures and reports over the years have been an inspiration for me, particularly now I'm slowing down at age 72. I hope I have the grit to keep going as Roger did. I was really thrilled ...

Creag Mhor Thollaidh and Loch Maree

Mark and I moved to the Gairloch area last November (from Norfolk and Derbyshire). A great place to go through lockdowns and we have taken the opportunity to explore the local area. In fact we've been to Dingwall and Inverness a couple of times each - and that's it for travel. We lived at Port Hende...

Re: Ticks

Walk all the time off path here in Poolewe, through heather, tussock grass and bracken (if unavoidable). Lots of deer everywhere. Started in May getting a tick or 2 every time we were out despite tucked-in socks, gaiters and overtrousers. When midges began I started treating my lower legs, as well a...

Re: Picos de Europa

Spent a 6 days in the Picos last June. It was a fantastically scenic area. Just one of the walks - the Ruta de Cares - was busy otherwise generally quite quiet. We stayed at Cordinanes in the Valdeon valley on the southern part of the Picos. This was my favourite area - very empty - but I don't real...

10 days in Morvern & Mull - bikes, birds & a bothy

This is a 'round up' report of a ten night stay at Lochaline in Morvern, a couple of walks have been the subject of separate reports. I guess not many people stay for 10 days in Lochaline but I prefer to go where most others don't so Morvern with no Munros and only a few Corbetts and Grahams promise...

Re: Glen Galmadale Horseshoe - minus BnC and wrong way round

I resent that! I'm old and I was pretty cold but I was definitely running. It's steep up there! :? I think I had the best descent..long and interesting and mainly out of the wind. I do apologise, just taking advantage of our encounter to add a bit of interest to the report. I certainly wasn't runni...

Glen Galmadale Horseshoe - minus BnC and wrong way round

Today I had intended to climb Bheinn Mheadhoin from Kingairloch. But in driving down to launch Jim's kayak at Camas na Croise I didn't see any parking spaces and it was a couple of miles road walk back to the start so I thought I might as well do some of the Glen Glamadale round instead. I didn't th...
