Re: Midge Repellent

I'm a recent convert to Smidge after grabbing a bottle from an outdoor shop on a whim (aka waiting in the queue for the till & got suckered in by yet another strategically placed marketing trap) - anyway this time it paid off as the stuff smells lovely, doesn't make you feel slimy like the skin-...

Re: Weird stuff found on walks

I found (and recoiled in horror at) a "dangermouse" stuffed into Mullach Frach Coire's summit cairn last year. Feel free to google it as i'm not explaining it here  Seriously though, who does that? OK, so I've googled a "dangermouse" and it's only the furry detective ...

Re: Have you ever been in serious trouble in winter on the h

Hairy moment on Ben Chabhair earlier this autumn. Set off from Beinglas campsite.. lovely day, a bit patchy drizzly but nothing bad forecast. The whole walk in was mild and calm. Got onto the winding path heading towards the summit, turned a corner.. and holy gale force winds from nowhere! Fought on...

Re: High altitude travel insurance

Hi, We've used Campbell Irvine for all our Nepal treks including Everest Base Camp. I think it worked out about £70 per head for the base camp trek but we were covered for every eventuality. We've never had to make a claim yet (thank god) so can't comment on service from that end, but they are no ha...

Re: Advice on Kili needed

Hi Vicky - I went to everest base camp in Nov, I got myself a women's Patagonia goose down jacket with 800 fill. It was much less bulky than some other makes I tried on and light as a feather, it also came with a stuff bag that compressed it down to about the size of a travel towel so was no bother ...

Re: Ben Nevis/disabled walker

Hi - I was going up Goatfell earlier this year & we met a group supporting a young man with cerebal palsy, there were about 6 strapping men who had him roped up to them and were almost hoisting him in sections when he couldn't support his own weight. We met them coming off the summit & had a...

Re: down jackets

I got my Patagonia 850 fill down jacket through an ebay store called surfdome for just under £100. I'm just back from everest base camp where we had temperatures of -25 from Namche Bazaar and it kept me alive (although I also had several layers on underneath!). Agree with the others though, I think ...

Re: Ticks and Lyme Disease

I got my first (and hopefully last) tick last year at the Red Squirrell in Glencoe. Funny thing was I had trousers tucked into my socks, a long sleeve top and a hoodie on the whole time. I remember having an itchy upper arm in my sleeping bag but couldn't be arsed freeing myself from my cocoon to gi...

Re: The trip of a lifetime - Nepal

Fantastic. Wouldn't have minded seeing your other 1275 pics!! I'm going to base camp in Nov this year so read your descriptions with much interest, especially the take-off/landing at Lukla.. yikes. I've been to Nepal twice before but only got up to about 14,500ft so this will be a whole new level of...

Re: Creepy crawlies ........

I've managed to pull a tick out of my arm no bother, but huge furry house spiders give me the absolute heebies. They don't get a second chance in my house, once I have hung, drawn & eighth'd them I impale their severed body parts onto spikes & post at strategic points around the house as a w...

Re: Is It Worth It ?

Went to see Doug Scott give a lecture on Everest, K2 & Kanchenchunga and he said there was a recognised phenomenon called 'summit fever' where you become so consumed with beating the mountain that your common sense goes right out the window and you start making all the wrong decisions.. so basic...
