Re: Strathfarrar four

One of the reasons I haven't done these four Munros yet is because of this locked gate / ticketing malarkey. So as I understand it, you need to wait at the gate for the landowner to open it at 9am and give a linited number of people a ticket. 25 I believe. Is this so? That seems to me to fly in the ...

Re: Munros with 'meh' views...

I expect you're gonna get the full gamut of answers here. I have to disagree with Jupe. I DO subscribe to the view that "there's no such thing as a dull hill". However, the very rapid caveat is.... some hills are are better than others, of course. I think a lot of people conflate the hill ...

Re: Ben Alder from Dalwhinnie on foot

I've always biked it, but from what I remember it's about 11 miles from Dalwhinnie to the branch off path down to the Allt a'Bhealach Bheithe to then start heading up to the Long Leachas. I would say I'm an averagely to fairly fit walker and would expect to walk that in about 3 hours each way, add ...

Re: How did you stay fit during lockdown?

I didn't. :(

I piled on weight at a rate not seen since I was in the womb.

The most exercise I did was long meandering walks from my settee to the fridge (about 12 steps).

According to my kids I'm now officially 'fat'.

Re: Duke of Edinburgh awards

I've never had anything to do with DoE or any similar programme, sadly. But have massive respect for any young person who managed to stick it out and who's made a better life for themselves as a result. Must say, though, any time I've ever seen young DoE'ers out on the hills, they mostly look utterl...

Map website

Can anyone help, please?

I'm trying to remember the name of the map website that does OS maps (at less than retail price?) and with free delivery within 24hrs?

I'm sure I recall WH'ers mentioning it on here before?

Grateful, as ever, for any help.

LF.

Re: The Old Forge Community Ownership

 Wow...the Belgian dude does sound a bit of a whacko. I'm glad I've never had to endure that experience at his hands. One thing I cannot stand is poor customer service or purveyors of any kind of service thinking THEY'RE doing YOU a favour by letting you spend your money at their establishmen...

Re: Music while you walk

Your views are equally as valid as any music critic. Good point well made. A few years ago I was active on a web forum all about Beethoven. (I was going through a very intense LvB phase at the time! ) I mentioned in one post that, musically speaking, I was utterly talentless, couldn't ...

Re: Mountain Rescue

Unnecessary callouts aren't something that I've ever heard MRT friends complain about, quite the opposite, there can be a very small window of opportunity from someone being lost, cold and wet to the beginnings of hypothermia. Once even mild hypothermia tales hold, it is a very quick downward spira...

Re: Music while you walk

Yep, would agree with what others have said already. The sound of nature ...ideally silence... is what I want to hear when I'm out on the hills. Anything artificial or man made (especially any kind of pop or rock music) is absolutely anathema to me. For me, very often the best part of any walk is si...

Re: Outdoor enthusiasts and ageing

Interesting and thought provoking thread. :D It's kinda weird to have long-standing posters on here reveal their age. In my head, when I've read posts in the past, I have an image of us all as young vigorous 30 somethings.* *Except Sgurr of course, who is WH's own much revered Golden Oldie :...

Re: Mountain Rescue

Not a supporter of this proposal tbh. Importantly, as has been said above, MRT themselves don't support this proposal. I wonder how many people, after having been rescued by MRT, make a donation to the Team that rescued them? Or undertake a wee bit of fund-raising (sponsored walk or whatever) to sho...
