Re: Loch lochy munros

There was a reasonably large parking area for walkers when I was there in August. Would easily have taken 10 cars, probably more. They had left some machinery and aggregate there though so the number of spaces may be variable.

Re: A Fassfern duo

Not done these two yet so your route will come in handy thanks. I might wait for a drier spell though......

The snake is a Slow worm, there's nae Grass Snakes in Scotland (well not this far north anyway).

Re: Carnivorous plants in October?

There are Scottish records and photos for both drosera and pinguicula on iRecord from October last year. Might be past their best and on the wane but you should have a chance of seeing them.

Re: Dog Hill Etiquette.

Apparently if you use de-worming medicine and/or flea/tick medicine, some of the chemicals come out in the poo and can have adverse effects on the ecosystem. A very good point. Also dogs swimming in water bodies like ponds and rivers have similarly been linked to negative effects on water quality a...

Re: campsites ban?

If you use the ukcampsite website then you can search by map for the area you wish to visit and filter the results for those which take tents. Then click through to the relevant campsite website to make a booking.

Re: Skye - Potholes

Given that their construction costs also inflate their carbon footprint for the first few years of their existence, there's probably a case to be made for their owners paying a higher road tax than currently and for some of that cash to be spent on potholes. Not true: https://www.tiresplus.com/blog...

Re: Of Map Accuracy and Natural Phlebotomy

I don't know if this has been the case here, but often power companies will be permitted to install a new track when upgrading powerlines on the proviso that the track is restored to its previous 'natural' state when they are finished.

Re: Help with plant ID

Hi Jmarkb,

This is Greater Wood-rush - Luzula sylvatica. Also commonly found in lowland and upland woodlands, particularly beside burns and streams.

Cheers,
David

Re: New Grahams!!!

Clearly this change has been some time in the making and a lot of effort and thought has gone into it. A shame that it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. I find it particularly odd that the Grahams list is now defined by a different criteria than those used by the person who they are named for......

Re: Deer Ked countermeasures

But the big question is this: were Deer Keds always this bad or have they got worse over the last couple of years? Is there an explosion in numbers and is it related to climate change? They are certainly just as horrible as midges and clegs, though in a different way, but you don't see any informat...

Re: Fear of heights

Hi Lorna, I suffer from something very similar to what you describe. What I have realised over the years is that whilst the anxiety/feeling of dread is triggered by something (perhaps the visual thing mentioned by jmarkb), it's mostly just in my head and it can be eased by certain things. Having com...

Re: Type of Bee?

It's a type of fly called Tachina grossa

They are parasites of various species of large furry caterpillars that you see on the hills such as Fox moth

Re: 30 Years On

Where did all the hares go? What happened to them all? Mountain hare populations naturally fluctuate, something akin to 'boom and bust'. Maybe 30 years ago was peak hare and they're now at the bottom of the cycle? https://www.mammal.org.uk/species-hub/full-species-hub/discover-mammals/species-mount...

Re: Stob a' Choin Footbridge

From bitter experience I can say that following the Allt Sgionie to the forest edge is not much fun! There is a deer fence with a stile to access the open hill but between the forest track and the fence is nothing but thick spruce and mud. This was a few years ago now but unless the forest has been ...
