Re: MWIS - losing confidence?

If anyone is in the Fort William area on 12th November they can put their questions and points to Geoff Monk one of the guys behind the MWIS. I have organised for him to come and talk to my local hillwalking club. Non-members are very welcome to attend. You can find out full details in my post in th...

Re: Should walkers pay for access?

That would be the owner of a walking and activity company called Wilderness Scotland! Perhaps, he has a vested interest, as those of us entering areas would have to pay an agent or be accompanied?

Re: The Eastern Mamores & Outliers

This is a great route and you get a real feeling of remoteness when you walk it. You were right to avoid the scree slopes on Sgurr Eilde Mor they are not pleasant to descend.

Re: Cleg Alert ! ! !

They're murderous this year, particulalry when the weather has been good. It's not just around the Loch Leven area, I have been attacked by swarms of them in Glenfinnan and Gairloch.

P.S. It's nice to see someone else from the village on the fourm.

Trying to get closer to Gulvain

Your perception of distance can play tricks on you in the mountains. Perhaps, it's the unique mountain light that causes your brain to go haywire and pretend that the summit in the distance is closer than you think. More likely the boost of exercise related hormones, that are triggered when you lace...

Re: Last one on MAP 41...AM BODACH..a single please!

Congratulations on completing Map 41. It will take a long time for me to complete all the Munros within it as I have selected Stob Ban to be the summit I will complete my round upon. I decided I had to complete on a Mamore as I see them everyday of the week. I can see the summit of one and slopes of...

Re: TIME TO VOTE: Best pub in Highlands

Thanks for sorting out the voting Paul. I am glad there was so much interest in this topic. Perhaps we can have a few more polls from time to time in the future.

Re: Potential Cleg Bite Treatment

Caberfeidh wrote:You could paint yerself inch-thick in axle grease, that might keep them off for a bit. Or do what I do, and take up canoeing in sea lochs in this weather, to avoid the bitey critters. I saw a minke whale yesterday.

Now what would you need to treat a minke whale bite?

Re: Your favourite walkers pub in the Highlands?

Couldn't say......Pubs are dens of iniquity and my body is a temple  I've certainly never been in say, the Clachaig, the Applecross, the Old Inn Gairloch, the Kintail Lodge, The Old Bridge Aviemore, the Falls of Dochart Killin, the Aultguish, the Torridon Inn (Ben Damph), the Slig, the Inverga...

Re: Your favourite walkers pub in the Highlands?

I have two recommendations, one extremely obvious the second probably unknown to many. 1. The Clachaig Inn (NN 127 567) This had to be nominated as the iconic climber’s and walker’s pub nestled in the heart of Glencoe. With The Three Sisters, the Aonach Eagach Ridge, Bidean nam Bian just a stones th...

Re: Your favourite walkers pub in the Highlands?

Do we all get two then? I didn’t specify a limit on the number of pubs someone can nominate so feel free to recommend as many as you like. Most of us will have a handful of pubs that we will always go back to when we are in the area. I am sure everyone else on the forum will be interested in what i...

Your favourite walkers pub in the Highlands?

It’s amazing how the prospect of a pint beside a roaring log fire manages to lift your spirits when you’re cold, wet, and tramping though the mist. On a recent circuit of the Moidart Hills the sight of The Lochailort Inn in the distance kept me going on the long wearying descent. Unfortunately, some...
