Re: First cuckoo

Not boring at all. I briefly thought I heard one today while walking towards the Allt An't Sluic Lodge near Dalwhinnie (I'd been up The Fara on the track from the north-east). I didn't hear a repeat so assumed I had been mistaken - but checking emails etc when I got home, I note cuckoos are in Fife....

Hill of Foudland

On the advice of WH coralannbirnie I approached this hill from the west. Plenty of parking. A very straightforward walk, mostly on the track. Skylarks everywhere.
Foudland.jpg
The trig point and possible summit lie just south of the track

While at the trig, I got a cheery wave from a runner passing on the track - the only person I saw on the hill.

Tap o' Noth

An interesting walk to finish my short trip to Keith. There were only a couple of cars in the carpark when I arrived so plenty of room. Good paths, but I found the first part a bit of a slog up the side of the wood. The gradient has obviously caused problems for the path surface, washed down to the ...

Craiglich

A real extravagance this walk - spent far more time driving there than I did on the hill, but just too good a day not to be out. An early start from home meant I drove over the Cairnwell before the snow plough but the road was fine. Clear and bright, ground slightly frozen. No cattle and no people e...

Cruach Tairbeirt

First walk in the west for some time, really enjoyed driving a different road although Loch Lomond side was as unforgiving as ever. I left the car at the side of the forest access road (thanks to .... for this information) and walked up the forest track then, a short distance after the Three Lochs W...

Bin of Cullen

A really nice little hill, justifiably popular. I met more walkers here than I have done for some time - dog walkers, family groups, tourists. Really pleasant through the forest then up on to the heather - the mountain bike trails looked scary (not tempted at all!) Bin of Cullen.jpg Impressive view ...

Waughton Hill

Really easy parking in Strichen then followed the track/footpath as per WH reports. The 'white horse' is very impressive from a distance, but more difficult to appreciate when standing on its nose! Very cool breeze on the summit so didn't linger. Back more or less the same way but took a more direct...

Nutberry Hill

An easy walk along the track past Dippel Lodge, then struck NE past the crow traps and over Spirebush Hill. Nutberry.jpg Bad choice of route. (Should have read McMole's report.) Weather closed in, driving rain, low cloud and very poor visibility on the return walk back to the car. Thank goodness for...

A handful of Sub 2Ks

By my advanced age you'd think I'd know better than to set unrealistic targets .......... at the start of 2023 I planned to collect 25 'new to me' balloons in six months. As social life, a leg injury and various commitments got in the way, the months stretched on until November. With most nearby bal...

Bengairn - a pleasant autumn walk

Thinking of a walk to Bengairn recently, I looked at maps and read some WH reports. Confident I knew what to expect on the walk, I decided to start from the road to Bengairn House. Although I had studied the walk, I hadn't paid as much attention to the road approach and nearly missed the turning off...

Orange peel fungus

Stunning colour on an otherwise fairly grey day (trackside approaching Colt Hill), this Orange peel fungus was really brilliant. Quite a coincidence as Sgurr recently brought it to my attention after a previous post, thank you, Sgurr. I was delighted to see the fungus - and not orange peel this time...

Colt Hill

I can see why some people may take a bike here - the descent must be brilliant - I decided to walk it. Slightly damp weather but no real rain, just low cloud, mizzle. 20231016_110924.jpg 20231016_123317.jpg Needless to say, the cloud began to clear after I left the top (I had walked up in blissful i...

Re: Beinn Each - and a short rant

Nice photo, Sgurr. We are back in the fungi season, amazing colours when you stop to look at them.

Creag Dhubh

Not much to add to other descriptions. Leaving the church carpark (no other cars) I headed through the graveyard and over the fence in the nw corner into the bracken where I followed a 'cattle path' over to the fence. Bit wet. Even wetter heading up the fence line but no real obstacles - thence over...

Beinn Each - and a short rant

Fairly close to home so an option for a shorter day. Good parking in the lay-by at Ardchullarie Burn on the east side of Loch Lubnaig but I expect that gets really busy on a good weather weekend. Dry but with fairly low cloud all day so sadly missed the views as seen in other WH reports. Even so the...
