Re: Stoatally Different

Amazing photos. I saw an ermine once near Inverness from the back of a minibus, but have never seen one close up. The technical discussion on stoats and weasels is very informative... However, out of interest, which continent are we on here? It's clearly a stoat if in the UK. No idea what you have i...

Re: Mystery bird...

Thanks for the ID. I have plenty of Dunnocks in my garden too but it just looked a bit orange, which is why I was a bit confused... maybe its been on the spray tan.

Mystery bird...

Saw this small songbird on the coast at Fowlsheugh, near Stonehaven.

Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Culbin Forest wildlife

I think your brain fungus is probably a slime mould.

Very cool things slime moulds - they are classified in a biological kingdom of their own + have some very strange properties. The attached link is a good example...

Re: Lost dog on A' Mharconaich area

Went up A' Mharconaich cross-country from the transmitter, headed round the south flank of Beinn Udlamain, and had a good look around the head of Coire Dhomain (and just to the south). Headed back over Sgairneach Mor, but was entirely in mist until dropping down towards the Sow of Atholl (so not muc...

Re: Lost dog on A' Mharconaich area

Sorry to hear you've had no luck yet. I'm heading over this morning to walk A'Marconaich towards Ben Udlamain. I appreciate this area has been walked a lot already but can't do any harm.... always the possibility that he's done a grand tour and come back on himself. I imagine if he's still going he'...

New record (sort of)

Rather chuffed at having just increased my Munro count from 15 to 23 in one afternoon - without even leaving my sofa! I've just found my old North Scotland map from when I was a student with details of all the mountains I climbed and since had forgotten which ones they were... unfortunately had to d...

Re: Gairich by Kayak and Corbett with views to Cuillin/Knoyd

Great report + really good photos. The combination of kayaking and hill walking is a good idea... I have a kayak languishing at a friends house - will have to get it out again.

Re: Preparing for midges

I tried Smidge for the first time in Mull recently. Seemed to work well and doesn't have the same toxic vibe that DEET has. I think it may depend on the person though? - I don't seem to react to midge bites too much. Midges can be a pain, but as far as I can see they're fairly time, place and weathe...

Re: Magical Skye - Inversions & scrambling - Day 3 Scotland

Stunning pictures - I love the way in one of the shots you can see the cloud flowing over the saddle into the next valley...

Re: Speyside Way Birds

Some good shots there... I think you've also got a few pink-footed geese mixed in with your greylags.

Re: Not quite wildlife

Nice - I remember diving at Pennan years ago and there were scores of inch-long flatfish in the shallows - very cute. Not seen one that small though.

Loch Lee Wildlife

To celebrate the end of Winter (as far as I can work out it ended on Friday), there was loads of wildlife out and about this weekend around the Loch Lee area. Didn't take many photos but a few interesting things below... I counted a total of four cuckoos near the loch - a couple were making a dedica...
