Re: A good camera for the hills?

The Sony RX100 range are definitely worth looking at, mark III onwards. They're not hardy though, I put my camera away in bad weather and just use the phone. I have found mine can survive a few spots. I keep it in a small freezer bag with a sheet of kitchen roll. I'm careful to wipe water off the l...

Re: Winter gloves: I’m narrowed down to two good options

Haven't tried the gloves you mentioned, but it's worth having a few spare pairs as they are easily lost - the Simond gloves from Decathlon are good value. I am using these and in the dry they keep my hands toasty even in -15 wind chill. I carry at least two pairs for when the first ones wet out, an...

Re: New Highway Code rules and mountain areas

On some Highland roads, a vehicle could be stuck behind a cyclist for tens of miles if strictly obeying the rules. I just want to add to the chorus of people saying the same sort of thing. I've never encountered cyclists who did not pull into passing places for me on single track roads and I've alw...

Re: Mountain Climbing for beginners - Advice!

I just realised I don't have my own bee and I've been going up Munros for a while now. I need to remedy this or I could be in real trouble on the next hill.

I once met a person on the top of Helvellyn who tested out the cornices by jumping on them.

Re: Any need for axe/crampons now?

That does appear to be the standard thinking among forums like this. Though I don't why - to me the security of crampons over a patch of ice or hard snow feels like much more use than trying to flail around with a axe IF you slip due to having no crampons. Because the axe helps you self-arrest and ...

Re: 2021

Had a crazy dream of an Easter trip if there is still snow. Definitely returning next Christmas and maybe will do something in the sumemr but I prefer not to because of midges. I'm better kitted out for winter anyway.

Re: Your coldest day?

My coldest day was last February: -27C on Beinn Eighe. This was with wind chill so I had other problems. 4 pairs of trousers, 5 layers on top, The only other time I've felt chill like it was on top of Cairngorm.

Re: 2020

Started the year unemployed but got up to Scotland twice and had some epic walks on Munros I'd not done before. Then...well pretty much the standard story. Culminating in the usual post-xmas holiday being cancelled and no indication of when I could legally be allowed to get back out. On the plus sid...

Re: Staying at a hostel

Update is I just had my booking cancelled, so I get all my money back and I don't need to do it myself. Sadly the Porteee hostel is likely to be closed until April. I am definitely going to try and take some days up in the hills this winter and I am hoping that restrictions will ease to let me do th...

Re: Oops, Something Else Lost.

I have a habit of losing / mislaying things in everyday life, and that includes when I'm out and about. On Beinn a Bheitheir there's a very Nice leather dog lead and another one beside Lochan Bhuide in the Cairngorms (both laid down and forgotten about). On the top of the Coulin Pass ,there's an ex...

Is that possibly because ANPR cameras are seeing that you're from the same area?

Re: New covid restrictions

Head up on the 23rd Dec. That’s my intention. Two days to hit the hills and back for Christmas. I might even head back up Boxing Day. I'm literally booked from 27th and it's 560 miles for me so not so easy. I just worry that the Scottish government are shutting the border for the rest of the year (...

Re: New covid restrictions

As I understand it, it is illegal for me to enter Scotland from England under the current restrictions. Does anyone think this could be lifted before Christmas? I realise none actually knows. Just wondering when, if st all, I should be thinking about cancelling my accommodation for a post-Xmas walki...

Re: Time to stop the burn

Would those that advocate rewilding of land and stopping "blood sports" also insist on the removal of all tracks that were created to enable them to take place? Just wondering. I'm not advocating rewilding but I'd be all for lots of these tracks disappearing yes! I don't need to walk alon...
