Glen Lyon four, Bluesky

We did these four today. Start up through the woods following the or age topped posts. Up the muddy Hydro track, then cut off left for the first summit. Bluesky apart from 20mins of zero visibility, them t shirt all day. We came off the last summit then re joined the hydro track. Weird looking west ...

Re: GPS Advice please

Although I use a gps, normaly in the rucksac, I use map skilks and compass skills all the time. I would suggest your group buys in a mountain leader for a days navigation training. Splitting the cost will make it cheap and it will make more difference than a gps.

cheers

Re: Stob Ban and a spare tube in the grey corries

Nice slabs for rock climbing.

All that stuff on the table is from UK issue army ration packs. The red things are just boiled sweets.

Re: Step in crampons popping off

From the pics, looks like you are using fully rigid crampons on boots with no lip for the toe bail. Those toe bails will not stay on those boots. You need to get strap on g10 type crampons.

Re: Snowbuntings

They were very noisy up the Tarmachan ridge yesterday. Just fleeting glimpses though.

Re: Tiso sold to JD Sports

I would say the best climbing shop is TISO RATHO, all kit is good stuff and a range of climbing kit. Even specialist items like Aloksac bags are there. Staff very knowledgeable too.

Bit different to " Highrange" in Grt Western road, many years ago.

Re: Glen Etive Munros Friday 8th November

I have done them all, ticked Aighean in Aug. , it is pretty dry once on the ridge of Starav. There will be some ice high up probably.

Certainly a lot of up and down for 7hrs. Have fun !

Re: Hillwalking Waterproof Jacket

Agreed, unissued goretex jackets are £40. Why pay more ?

I still save my Berghaus Trango extreme 3 layer goretex jacket for hillwalking only. Glued some tape back on the seams but still going strong, bought in 93.

Re: Walkhighlands gear review: Gloves

Not layering but the outer will wet through in a typical day. Roll on the bluesky icey cold days :D

Re: Walkhighlands gear review: Gloves

It's the wet snow, wet rain, hands overheating when going uphill...... Then the milder air lower down. Don't rely on one pair of gloves in winter. That's my experience. You need the dexterity to work a compass and zips remember.

Re: Walkhighlands gear review: Gloves

Problem with gloves up a mountain is when they get wet......... Some winter climbers swear by the Chamonix Binmen gloves and others the Skytec gloves for below freezing conditions when outdoor working. A review needs to have a day testing them, like today wet and windy. I have three pairs in winter,...
