The Black Mountains in Wales that are east of the Brecon Beacons are the closest Hewitt-sized hills to that part of the M5. You can do that in an hour or so from the Severn Crossing. It's a nice area to walk.

I can only guess. It looked like heavy duty stuff, not the sort of thing you'd carry up on your back.

They are quite pleasing to the eye. I had my first visit to N Wales yesterday, and what I saw up there was a lot less regular -- generally more rugged, rocky and harder on the knees on the way down. Still quite pleasant, though, in a different kind of way.

I'd say that's weathered basalt, Milesy. The smaller voids are where air was trapped when it was formed. There are areas of sedimentary rock on Skye so you could check out a geological map.
