Re: Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes!!

Please can anyone recommend any pre/post climb exercises. My right knee has been playing up recently. Its not too bad for everyday activities but it is interfering with my long-distance running!!!! .... I've been having a problem with one of my knees for a few weeks. Never had knee problems until t...

Re: Info & pics on Crib Goch, please?

It makes a great day out if, as someone else has suggested, it's combined with the scrambles on the other side of Snowdon towards Y Lliwedd. However, if you've not had much scrambling experience I wouldn't do it if it's wet or windy. I went over there when the rock was wet and slippery and it's not ...

Re: Training ideas

I don't have any big hills near by ... I've noticed that a number of the people who post here and detail the really long arduous multi-munro routes they've done appear to be (or have been) hill runners. So, you could try running even if you've some modest sized hills nearby. The ones nearest me are...

Re: Arenig Fawr

Did these quite a few years back in snow and ice - was great in those conditions... the road getting to it was a bit scary though! Fine pics :D I reckon trying to keep the car out of a ditch, or river, or worse can be the most dangerous part of a winter day in the hills. Lovely route. I remember do...

Arenig Fawr

This is a nice quiet walk south of the A4212, although rather boggy over most of the route. I started at a track that comes off a minor road signposted to Arenig, just after some electric cables on pylons cross the road. The day included adjacent Nuttalls with the Hewitts giving 6 summits altogether...

Re: South Wales Advice

Thanks. I am more often in Cheltenham so would probably head west along the A40. Can you suggest a good starting point for a walk that gives me minimum driving from there? There are several valleys cut through the area, one has a number of parking areas and runs through the Mynydd Du forest. You ca...

Re: South Wales Advice

The Black Mountains in Wales that are east of the Brecon Beacons are the closest Hewitt-sized hills to that part of the M5. You can do that in an hour or so from the Severn Crossing. It's a nice area to walk.

Re: Ben Vorlich, Stuc a' Chroin and others from the dark side...

Thanks, malky. To all you scramlemaniacs out there - is Stuc a' Chroin a good place for me to try a real scramble ascent for the first time or are there others that would make more sense to try first? Well, I did it a few weeks back along with the Tarmachan Ridge and this was my first taste of scra...

Re: Top Notch Walk

I checked my GPS thing at the start of the walk. The Eastings were perfect but the North/South coordinates placed us 500m north of our actual position - in poor weather that could be a bit dangerous. I then checked it at the two summits and got exactly the same result - anyone else have this proble...

Re: Meall nan Tarmachan

I read some of this thread before heading up to Scotland last week for a few days, and Meall nan Tarmachan ended up being my first Munro. It was late when I arrived, but thought I'd go for it anyway along with the ridge. It worked out okay as there was still enough light at 10.45 in the evening when...

Re: Ticks

I put this stuff on my socks, gaiters and trouser legs: http://www.nomadtravel.co.uk/catalog/brand/bugproof/bugproof-clothing-treatment It contains an insecticide called permethrin. If that doesn't work I carry one of these to remove anything that attaches: http://www.bada-uk.org/products/tickremove...

I can only guess. It looked like heavy duty stuff, not the sort of thing you'd carry up on your back.

Re: Carmarthen Fan

They are quite pleasing to the eye. I had my first visit to N Wales yesterday, and what I saw up there was a lot less regular -- generally more rugged, rocky and harder on the knees on the way down. Still quite pleasant, though, in a different kind of way.

Carmarthen Fan

These are some photos from a walk I did a few weeks back. I've also included better ones from a trip earlier in the month when there was snow on the ground. I found walking it clockwise the best, as this meant there were better views on the long stretch between the road and Gareg Las (or maybe it wa...

Re: Fossils

I'd say that's weathered basalt, Milesy. The smaller voids are where air was trapped when it was formed. There are areas of sedimentary rock on Skye so you could check out a geological map.
