Re: Recommended gear for winter walking with dog

I doubt your dog needs a coat. I can only see a use for boots when you get that kind of snow that forms balls under your dogs pads, but in the ten years I've had mine that has happened twice. Are you sure your dog would tolerate boots? When my dog split a toenail on a mountain and was bleeding I had...

Re: 45L rucksack and Thermarest Venture WV Advice Needed

I doubt your backache will improve with a different mat, unless you get a really thick one, which then would be to heavy. Invest in a good backback. You have to spend time and try different models to see what fits you best. Insist on trying them loaded with proper weight to have a realistic experien...

Re: Pathway from Inversnaid/Stronachlachar to Aberfoyle

It's mostly forest tracks, trainers/approach shoes would be sufficient

Re: Dog backpacks

I have one for my dog but only needed it on longer tours. To be honest they are not that practical and the dog is not that keen on it. I had to take it off him on exposed sections because it affects his balance. One memorable comedy moment on the WHW when he leaned over on a steep bank to drink from...

Re: Conic Hall, Loch Lomond for firstime hiker?

Conic Hill is a nice little hill with no real difficulties, although the very last bit to the summit (just off the WHW) can be a bit slippy. I have not been on it since the path has been redone, so I don't know whether that section was improved as well. I don't know whether bus times would allow thi...

Re: Paramo trousers

I have given up on Goretex trousers a long time ago. Too heavy, too expensive and often too hot. And worst of all the faffing of putting them on and off again, and always misjudging the timing. Like you I wear the Velez light adventure smock all year round and love it. I have had my Cascada trousers...

Re: Suggestions for walks in the Trossachs

There are usually a lot of sheep +/- cattle around the Mell and on Ben Vane, that could be tedious with collies. If you are up for a bit of walking off the beaten track (and don't mind trudging through a bit of heather), you could do a very satisfying and varied circular walk from Aberfoyle, basical...

Re: Walking with our dog

The Bridge of Orchy hotel has recently expanded, according to their website they now have rooms suitable for dogs. Have stayed at the Kings House, definitely possible there. In Kinlochleven we stayed in one of the little Cabins at the Macdonald Hotel, can't remember whether it was because the rooms ...

Re: Ben Venue hill trail closed - advice please

In this case you are better off going up the other route, from Ledard farm, Kinlochard. We went up the alternative path the forestry comission had initially designed on the approach you tried, it was a total mudbath, so we went down on where the old path would have been. I would not recommend it. Th...

Re: Naked Rambling

So it is okay to print photos of a naked man in a national newspaper but if one walks down the street it is an offence?

Re: Ben A'an

I would be surprised if it was. It is not very high and I doubt it has enough relative height. It is however a wonderful walk, even better if you don'tjust do it as an out and back, but walk over the next lump and find your way down to Loch Katrine and back along the shore. http://www.walkhighlands....

Re: Ben Oss from the south?

I've not done it, but when I recently did Meall an Fhudair I asked myself exactly that same question. We returned down the north flank onto the service track and it looked like it would be fairly easy from the end of that track to do Ben Lui and Ben Oss. The photo is taken from Meall nan Caora on th...

Re: MCofS consultation on vehicle access and the Long Walk In

Caberfeidh if you follow the link at the beginning of this thread through the MofS website, a guy called Stephen Reid makes an eloquent case for access for an area in Galloway. Personally I don't know that area and I'm not a climber, but I think his arguments deserve some consideration.
