Re: First cuckoo

That's interesting Dave. The cuckoo I heard on the 14th was in more or less the same area of commercial forestry behind Dalmally as was last year's first arrival. Later arrivals tend to be in areas across the other side of Strath Orchy and in Glen Strae. Odd that you should mention Cove. I know the ...

First cuckoo

First cuckoo has arrived here in North Argyll - heard on April 14th. That's one day later than last year, though if you discount February 29th it matches last year's April 13th. That's at the early end of my range over the past 10 years which runs from April 13th to April 26th. Sorry, am I being bor...

Re: Recommendations for Liner Socks

I've been using liner socks for over 40 years for similar reasons to you. Far and away the best I have found have been Helly Hansen. I had three pairs that I rotated for many years. When they finally wore out I tried various makes most of which either didn't work well or wore out far too quickly (a...

Re: first skylark singing

Agreed! Two days ago I saw three noisy Oystercatchers in Glen Strae where they come to nest by the River Strae, and yesterday I heaard the first woodpecker drum roll of the season in my North Argyll garden. Spring indeed.

Re: A fond farewell

We had some wind Kathleen, enough to take down odd branches but nothing worse really. Otie and I got blown about a bit, but more fun than discomfort. And very little rain, certainly compared to a couple of weeks ago when almost every route in the area was blocked one way or another. Keeping fingers ...

Re: Finding the perfect dip below the sandstone pavement

Have a great time Kathleen. Hostel sounds a better bet than unpredictable weather in a tent 😏

Re: Finding the perfect dip below the sandstone pavement

Ah, brings back memories Kathleen. Up there many years ago, though without the entertaining company of natatorial friends and canines. What a fine area it is. Maybe I should have retired to that house in Kinlochewe...

Re: A wildlife haven on the west coast

Lovely pictures thank you. The sand martins that are accustomed to nesting on the banks of the Orchy here have not yet arrived. I worry that some heavy spates during the winter have washed away too much of their nesting site. Great to see the otter. I recall many years ago sitting by Loch Torridon w...

Early Cuckoo

First cuckoo here in North Argyll yesterday (13/4). The most frequent time slot here over my 10 years noting arrivals (I know, I'm a pathetic bird nerd) is around 21st to 24th so this is an early bird. Poor soul - it's snowing here this morning.
