Re: Best food on the A9

The Ballinluig Motorgrill for breakfast (though the coffee machine they introduced as part of the recent revamp was a serious backwards step IMO, particularly in terms of the speed of service) and the Snack Shack in the Loch Ericht hotel in Dalwhinnie for tea on the way home - it is much improved fr...

Lost - pair of walking poles - Glen Derry (Cairngorms)

Black Diamond, red, two faithful old friends, had them at Fords of Avon, didn't have them when I got home, almost certainly left where I rejoined my bike, in the heather to the west of the Glen Derry path, just beyond the northern end of the woods and almost level with the last big solitary pine-tre...

Re: Avoid, avoid, avoid

I really enjoyed the Cateran Trail when I walked it with friends and family in June 2021, using the old Inns at Bridge of Cally, Kirkmichael and Kirkton of Glen Isla - all very warm and welcoming despite COVID restrictions - some lovely big wide empty glens, some nice wooded sections and no route fi...

Re: Climbing Stob Binnein only (Not via Ben More)

The main advantage of tackling Stob Binnein on its own from the South is this makes it easy to include its two Tops, which tend to be over-looked by those who get to Stob Binnein by first slogging up Ben More.

And some of my best friends are Tops!

Re: how do i get in touch with admins of the site?

Caberfeidh’s instructions are most helpful, but please note that you have to email Paul to ask him which window to throw the cannonball/skull through.

Good luck!

Re: Books

The First Fifty by Muriel Gray is/was very funny (though I’m not sure if it’s still in print) and ‘The Munros in Winter’ by the late great Martin Moran is a must-read for anyone who is interested in winter hill-walking in Scotland. Neither include any advice about taking dogs up hills.

Re: Liathach

I used Jim Sutherland (aka ‘Nineonesix’ ) based in Shieldaig’) to help get me and my teenage children up Mullach an Rathain from the back (ie over the Northern Pinnacles) a few years ago -not sure if he is still operating, but he certainly knows the Torridon hills well, if you do decide you need som...

Re: 2-in-1: Seana Bhraigh and the Beinn Dearg Group

Worth noting (again) that there is a surprisingly steep set of small but awkward cliffs between the summit of EnCG and the head wall of the Cadha Dearg, which the OS map doesn’t really show - also, I still reckon An Sgurr/Creag an Duine is the most spectacular peak that doesn’t make it onto any of t...

Re: Beinn Deargs alternatives

Start off from Inverlael, drop tents and camping stuff off at Lochan a Chnapaich, climb up over EnCG and out to Seanna Braigh and back, camp by the loch, bag the remaining Munros the next day (leaving the camping stuff by the loch), easy traverse round the bottom of Meall nan Ceaprachain to pick up ...

Re: Sgurr na Lapaich, Glen Affric

I reckon it's best to tick off every Top, demoted Munro, former Top, >900m Corbett and unnamed bump on all your favourite Munro summit plateaux & ridges, to reduce the risk of 'Compleaters Nightmare', ie hearing about a new Munro on your death-bed

Re: Sail Mhor to Eighe Main Ridge

The 1:25,000 OS map makes it look a lot simpler than it is, it was 'fun' (and fairly straightforward navigationally) in the Sail Mhor to Coinneach Mhor direction and looked impossible from above when I tried it in the other direction (at the end of a long day mopping up Tops), so I turned back and u...

Scottish National Trail Tick Boxes

Hi Paul, the tick boxes for the Scottish National Trail (to record whether or not I have walked a given section) appear briefly, but then disappear behind the map. All the other long distance walks I have looked at all seem to be fine, so I'm not sure why there is a problem with that one?

Re: Trip to Cairngorms in February

In terms of getting into winter walking, I'd start with day walks, to avoid the need to carry a big pack through soft snow or up and down steep slippy hillsides. The snag with the Cairngorms is that most of them are a long way from the road, so better suited for trips in May and June, (when there is...
