Re: Running on Ben Macdui and Derry Cairngorm

If you're looking to run in that area it might be worth dropping a note to Deeside Runners (local hill running club). We have regular group hill runs in the local area at the weekends and some evenings so I'm sure you'd be welcome to tag along. I'm not active at the moment so probably won't be there...

Re: Runner rescued in Cairngorms

As cmarcol asked, do fell runners ever carry things like map, compass, spare clothing, food, drink etc? For formal races runners will be required to carry certain bits of kit like map, compass, whistle and spare clothing. It varies slightly depending on the grade of the route (depends on length, am...

Re: No politics please!

This is reminiscent of the politician who complained of a website that advertised porn and was then told that the adverts were automated and based on his own browsing habits...

Re: New Routes - Scottish National Trail & Cape Wrath Trail

Great little site for the trail :)

5 weeks walking, or a single weekend's running! Would it be worth mentioning on the site that Deeside Runners relayed the trail in 4 days earlier this year?

Re: Shooting Greens - Banchory

I ran the shooting greens route recently. The access is still there but there's a lot of forestry work going on so you have to keep an eye out for the tracks being closed. They also leave the signs up often when there's no work actually going on. I said it in another thread recently that the FC have...

Re: Newbie camping essentials?

Hi Chrisoff, The west highland way is a very sociable walk, passing by many villages and watering holes along the way, Whatever you pack bear in mind that you are out to enjoy yourself, don’t weigh yourself down like a pack mule with lots of kit like many of us when we started. Once you have packed...

Newbie camping essentials?

I'm planning to do the WHW in May and while we're going to stay in B&Bs some nights it looks like it's going to be essential to camp a couple of times. I could borrow some camping stuff just for the trip but I've been thinking and quite like the idea of doing some occasional camping at weekends ...

Re: car park charges

They're installing the pay points and putting up signage at Scolty in Banchory just now with charges set to come in from April. So it looks like this is something they're bringing in across a lot of busy car parks. Incidentally this just reminded me that the forestry commission website used to be br...

Lochnagar at last

Lochnagar0018.JPG These are some of the hills and places you can see from the top of Lochnagar. Apparently. To be honest the marker could have Edinburgh, Amsterdam and New York written on it as there would be as much chance of seeing those places as there was of seeing Ben Macdhui, Ben Lawers or Mo...

Re: Coastal Wander - Stonehaven to Inverbervie

The Bervie Chipper was sold off years ago and has gone fairly downhill. However The Bay in Stoney is superb and the ice cream/sweetie shop beside it (Aunty Betty's) is amazing. There used to be a great, well used path between Catterline and Crawton which I used to use a lot when I grew up there. Was...

Re: Where to take visitors?

I'd second the Loch Brandy walk. Definitely doable in trainers and you get some great views of Clova. Glen Tanar is good but it could be quite busy. Bennachie can be done in trainers as well (I'd suggest the back of Bennachie route) but again it could be busy. Clachnaben might be possible but it's a...
