Re: Boot/ shoe fitting

There's also Craigdon in Inverurie if that's closer to you than heading in to the city. A helpful bunch last time I was in there.

Re: Technology and do I need to be careful?

Just to be pedantic, 'technology' would include printed maps and compasses as well as electronics like GPS devices, mobile phones and headtorches. The weak link is usually human decision making when cold, exhausted, distracted etc so the more sources of info you have with you the better your chance...

A big day on a "wee hill".

An annual November get-together normally blighted by wet, miserable weather was uncharacteristically blessed with crisp conditions and blue skies. In a year of too few hills I'd bagged my first Corbett of the year on Friday, a cold day in the shadow of clouds on Mam na Gualain after a cosy night in ...

Re: Scottish Big Five

A good thread and a tricky list to compose. I've already done a few versions and deleted them! Golden eagle has to be on there. Red deer as I think a big red deer stag is an iconic animal. Red squirrel also a must. Pine marten, capercaillie, ptarmigan, Scottish crossbill, mountain hare all definitel...

Re: BIG MEET! 6-8 Oct **2 BEDS AVAILABLE!!***

I won’t be able to attend now sadly. That means sunshine is guaranteed in the Highlands for that weekend and another bunk is available.     Has he cursed us?! I'm not saying it's going to be Skye 2013-esque levels of precipitation, but I suspect it's going to be ...

Re: Cycling in the hills

The handlebars actually offer a wider degree of positions (tops, drops, hoods) than a flat bar which are better for control over very awkward sections. I would recommend it! I think it's worth pointing out that you do get flat bar versions of many gravel bike offerings. I wonder if this just muddie...

Re: How many photos do you take on a day out?

A minimum of 1 (always take a summit pic) to a maximum of maybe a couple of hundred.depending on conditions and what's around to be seen. As satisfying as it is to get a great shot in photographic terms, I take them for the memories. It amazes me how much I can remember from a hill day when I look a...

Re: Garmin Fenix 7x question - routes/max limit

No experience with a Fenix, but my old Garmin Etrex H had a rather low limit to the number of waypoints it would allow. If you tried to transfer a route with waypoints exceeding the maximum number, I think it would give you a message asking the lines of "maximum number of waypoints exceeded&quo...

Re: Youngish people (20-30s) in the hills, Scotland vs. Engl

In the Highlands (save for the northwest) I seem to come across a far larger proportion of people in the mountains that aren't likely over 40. Couples, pairs, groups of a few friends. Which was nice to see. I wonder if this is a shared observation and if anyone can offer some plausible explanations...

Re: electric cars

Electric cars may end up being the equivalent of BetaMax. Oil companies are starting to really investigate fully synthetic fuels that can go into a standard ICE. This is what is being used in the World Rally Championship. If they can get ‘high end’ performance cars to run on fully synthetic fuels, ...

Re: Beastie reporting app

Who else likes to record and report unusual beasties they meet during their wonderings? I've been using the Dragon Finder app to report reptiles and amphibians, and I notice Ben Dolphin's excellent article on the oil beetle recommends iRecord. Recent reviews suggest iRecord has been having some pro...

Re: electric cars

I said goodbye to diesel last year with the full expectation that my current petrol car will be my last ICE car. The hope being that by the time it comes to needing the next new wagon, the charging infrastructure will be much improved, ideally I'll have solar panels on the roof and there'll be a wid...

Re: Midgies

O Lordy! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-61921623 Thankfully the non-biting sort. Still doesn't make them any more pleasant. Same most summers on the trails around Loch Leven, out in their thousands. Not pleasant cycling through cloud after cloud of them, buff over the mouth and glas...

Re: Lightweight smock recommendation ?

The Paramo Fuera option would likely fit the bill. Though be warned if you run hot you'll still be sweltering in your own perspiration. Not the most breathable, I very rarely wear mine in summer. I have an old Rab hooded perfect smock that's much better suited to summer. The Buffalo windshirt or tec...
