Team Toad

Following Ben Dolphins article https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/news/im-recruiting-for-team-toad/ I would like to add my support for team toad with these beauties. They were part of a toad army, we saw on 15th March, crossing the path near The Ling Hut in Torridon, presumably making their way to Loch...

Re: Relying on streams for water - planning

I howff up to 3l of bottled water on walks, terrified to drink water from streams given an ultra sensitive stomach that for weeks on end stops we getting out on hills the last few years. Do own a sawyers mini but scared to try it. Do the tabs kill absolutely everything. Would be great not to be lad...

Re: Relying on streams for water - planning

I normally take 2L with me, but on big 8-9 hour walks I'll need an extra 0.5L and sometimes still finish a bit thirsty. This summer I'm planning some longer ones and am not fancying carrying 3L/kg of water, so I'm looking to buy a filter. I've not really paid attention to streams/rivers when lookin...

Re: Walking glasses

A local optician suggested trying varifocal contact lenses for hill walking and I have found them really good. Less fuss than glasses, you can use sunglasses or goggles with them but they also seem to protect your eyes and I haven't needed to wear goggles in the wind and snow since using them. You c...

Re: Road Conditions in Rural Perthshire

We have been using the weather maps on Met Office website for travel conditions on the way to the hills as you can see where its snowing. I also like the website because you can put in the summit and see the forecast for nearby places . https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/maps-and-charts/precipitat...

Re: Removing ticks from camping gear

They need high humidity to survive. When not feeding they live in the grass very close to the ground where it's always humid. This is the reason they drop quickly in the drying room. Starving them is unlikely - from memory, they only feed three times in about two years. permethrin which will repel ...

Re: Removing ticks from camping gear

A number of articles suggest putting your gear in the tumble drier on hot heat for 6 to 10 minutes should kill the ticks. https://www.outdoors.org/resources/amc-outdoors/health-and-safety/like-to-kill-ticks-put-them-in-dryer/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27156138/ Not sure what it would do to you...

Re: Our friend Alteknacker

Such sad news, my thoughts are with Allan's family and friends. Alteknacker's trip reports were always enjoyable and inspiring, but despite his impressive stamina and achievements he still took the time to make positive comments and offer encouragement and advice to us lesser mortals. RIP Allan.

Re: Fear of heights

I used to wonder why I got anxious going up hill when the more common experience was to get vertigo looking down until I realised that keep bending my neck back to look up a steep slope in front of me or keep looking down at my feet then looking up can upset my balance. This led to me feeling anxiou...

Re: Beinn a'Chlachair, Geal Charn, Creag Pitridh - route opt

I've been looking at options for these three Munros in the Ardverikie / Loch Laggan area combining all three via the WH route 1. Beinn a' Chlachair only - start at Luiblea as per WH route but continue all the way up to Bealach Leamhain. Then to the summit via the ENE "ridge". Descend via ...

Re: Motorhome Parking Between Glenfinnan/Mallaig

We have stayed here a few times for Glenfinnan. https://www.linnhe-lochside-holidays.co.uk/ It is on the main road so should be ok for public transport and although some of the site is very regimented its pitches for smaller motorhomes and camper vans are more informal and quite pleasant. I'm not su...

Re: Walk Highland map issue

OK, I hate to wade in on the old map vs gps vs phone issue, as it obviously ignites a lot of conflict, which we can probably all do without, but here's a couple of observations as a 60+ year old having spent 40 years on the hills: 1) When was the last last time you saw anyone with the map and compa...

Re: River crossing

We normally wear boots and gaiters to keep the ticks out and try to avoid wading, but if we suspect it may be unavoidable take pocket wellies. They are quick to put on over boots, less hassle than changing shoes and probably no heavier!

Re: Glas Tholl path - An Teallach

We came down that way a few years ago, there was a good path to follow much of the way, it was a bit faint through some of the boggy ground, and some care was needed to negotiate the rhododendrons back to the road  . Here is the link to the walk report. https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/vie...
