Re: Car park campervanning

i presume this would be Linn of Dee carpark which is next to where Ben works. if so, overnighting in a camper is tolerated there, and there is a parking charge. Personally I have used my campervan to get into the hills. I don't park up in laybys or like to park with loads of others, but nor do I lik...

Re: Best alternative to Viewranger?

Thanks folks. I will probably stick with Viewranger as long as I can since I have the whole of Scotland in OS 1:50000. I thought Viewranger was going to be retired imminently, but maybe not. OutdoorActive also seems to give me 1:25000 which is very useful for the tiles I haven't bought in Viewranger...

Best alternative to Viewranger?

I love and have used Viewranger for years and find it's replacement, Outdooractive lacking in many of the features (crosshair, grid reference etc). Can anyone recommend a good alternative?

Re: Cape Wrath Trail sections - tough but worth it

There is no definitive Cape Wrath Trail - what is in the guidebook and WalkHighlands are merely suggestions. The Cape Wrath Trail is really just to get from Fort William to Cape Wrath any way you please. You can go over the mountains and avoid any villages if you preferred. That's why there are so m...

Re: Holidays!!!!

Inverness is also a great city :D In terms of location, it's simply the best. Buses and trains to Durness, Ullapool, Kinlochewe, Strathcarron, Aviemore... When I eventually move to Scotland, I'd like to live in Inverness. If I could find a suitable job, I'd move there tomorrow. Some good watering h...

Re: How has hillwalking changed?

What way is not the way? A descent that leads to a non-visible cliff edge? Then again if you're looking for the quickest route down... :D  Well aye - but my point was people just blindly following the trade route with no map etc. and assuming there was only one way up, and that everyone ...

Re: Holidays!!!!

I would suggest basing yourself in Inverness. Then you have all the public transport options of rail to Aviemore and Perthshire, bus / trains to west coast, Fort William and the north. That way you can keep your options open and follow the weather a bit more. Scotland's weather is very localised so ...

Re: How has hillwalking changed?

The northern Highlands are still fine for hitching, and I always stop for a hitchhiker - I am normally on my own and I am female too. I think there is less trust in people these days, but I continue to maintain it defiantly. The hills from looking at social media seem busier but it seems like the ho...

Re: Favourite/ least favourite mountain

SO many favourite hills, it is hard to list them all. Most of them? I don't really 'do' least favourite hills because it is so subjective and dependent on route, weather, company, time of year etc. I never understood people not liking a mountain due to a boring track going up it. Then don't go up by...

Re: The Little Things

- the scents of broom, bog myrtle and pine forests on a warm sunny day - hearing the cuckoo calling wherever you go in spring. The sound of the snipe as you lie in your tent. - tiny beautiful wild flowers coming into bloom - spotting mountain hares and ptarmigin - hearing the distant rush of a mount...

Re: It's about time! DofEing on the doorstep of winter!

Where abouts? Was it just the 8 kids or were Paul and myself there? I can only recall seeing one other person along that length - a solo female walker? Yeah that was me. I passed the kids first - it was the mention of them in your report that made me realise. I thought they must be Gold award due t...
