Braydon Crag from Mounthooly

our_route.gpx An excellent, if gruelling, walk. We took in Red Crib, Auchope Cairn, the Cheviot summit , Bellyside Crags (due to nav error) and Braydon Crag. An additional point to the walk was to locate pieces of the crashed USAF B17 Flying Fortress - which we did. It was a lovely slear, sunny day...

The Schill via Hen Hole and Auchope Cairn

our_route.gpx It took 2 hours in Steve's car to reach the Mounthooly bunkhouse. We weren't helped by logger's vehicles on the 6-7k of narrow single track valley road. As forecast it was sunny, but cold, as the valley lay in the shade of the low winter sun. The breeze was initially gusty, but eased ...

Hen Hole 3 Sisters and Red Crib from Mounthooly

our_route.gpx I began to understand the lure of the College Valley seeing it from the Mounthooly end. It's spectacular, with both a charm and grandeur. Mountains in miniature and the steep narrow gorge of the Hen Hole have to be seen. I was lucky to make it having to drive along flooded roads, from...

Hethpool, great Hetha, Aircrew Memorial

our_route.gpx Set off from Hethpool car park on dull, damp day. The brisk wind on the valley floor didn't bode well for higher up. Fair visibility and valley looked grand. Walked 2k to fingerpost, which pointed to a path going SW, not NW as map suggests. Took SW path, traversing contours comfortabl...

Old Bewick - Blaewearie - Cateran - Eglingham 'horseshoe'

$matches[2] Beautiful clear, mild day. No prob parking at OB (not staying anway, just drop off, but useful to note). Headed NE through cottages and farm bldgs, up steep path - initially muddy, then mostly hardcored - up W flank of Bewick Hill. Great views to E (Hanging Crags) W towards Bewick Folly...

Old Yeavering - Wooler via CBH

CBHviewfromRd.JPG $matches[2] V enjoyable walk in awful drizzle. It's linear route, so a drop off and pick up or 2 car job. Left OY to head SW along farm track for 1.5k to leave SE on st cuthbert's Way. Usually great views to College Valley, Newton Tors and Yeavering Bell, but all lost in misty dri...

Eglingham - Quarry House - Cateran Hill incl 'the Hole'

From the SP at Eglingham Xrd, it was the usual steep ascent up Tarry Rd, past the farm and Egm Hill trig pillar, then across the level moor top, to a gate in a stone wall. I left the hard cored farm track to follow a grass path N towards a square shaped wood. It was a dry day with light cloud, but r...

Eglingham, Hagdon, Quarry House Rd loop

our_route.gpx Great walk across eerily atmospheric Bewick and Quarryhouse Moors. Warm, sunny start in shirtsleeves up steep farm road, passing Tarry and Egl Hill trig pillar, then on to wide open expanse of Bewick Moor. At gate in stone wall, followed hard cored farm road (ignoring path to L across...

Cateran Hole Blaewearie Circular from Eglingham

our_route.gpx A great walk on a fine day, sunny, cool, light breeze. Climbed steep road past Tarry to gate in stone wall where path leaves farm track to head N across grass towards Quarry House and radio masts. The moor is wide open with views for miles across the hugh plateau and W to the Cheviots...

White Mounth Circuit - anti-clockwise

Early start. Clear day. Light, high cloud. Slow drive along single track road to Spittal of GM car park. Beautiful glen. Easy, clearly marked beginning on good path 1km to woods then beyond to begin gradual ascent, still on good track, to cairn which marks left turn, then climb more steeply above go...

Cateran Hill from Eglingham

our_route.gpx Lovely walk, sunny day, cool & gentle breeze. Aim was to recce Eglingham/Bewick Moor area, look for route to link to Quarry House and - if time - look at Cateran Hole. Didn't reach the 'hole' but now have better idea of area, so will bag another day. The rough tarmac road, heading...

Re: How did you stay fit during lockdown?

Bought a mountain bike. wasn't cheap but it was a lifesaver. Luckily plenty decent cycle rides nearby. Also walked a lot from home, but it's in the 'burbs and - like cycling - it ain't the same. Used the stairs for exercise too. Boring but the local walks have little ascent so had to do something. F...

Re: So how busy was it?

Its hard to get right. Even starting early I've returned to find I'm blocked in by bad parking. I much prefer to do a different walk each trip, but with the current congestion I'm using the same start point as it seems undiscovered/unpopular. I can still vary the route a little and the walking is go...

Re: Hi all

Hi and I hope you get some good tips on where to go. Don't know how much longish drives affect your pain levels and I've little knowledge of lower level walks but the landscape is so grand there must be lots. A couple that do spring to mind are the approaches to Driesh and Mount Keen, which, if memo...
