Re: Socks!

Possibly the perfect socks for this are the Wigwam Diabetic Walker Socks. The foot area is a regular Wigman outdoor sock construction but the ankle tube is a very soft stretchy fabric which exerts no pressure on your skin at all but still manages to not to roll down. I've long-term tested them and I...

Re: Windproofs Review

Thanks for the comments. Windshirts are one of my all time favourite bits of kit, still have my favourite purple Buffalo top, which now I think about, the fabric feels very similar to the grade Alpkit use in the Arro.

Montane? I asked them and they didn't want to play. A shame.

Windproofs Review

This month's review is live here http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/news/windproof-jackets-review/0014980/

A lot of good kit in this one, no bad choices to be made really. Any questions or additional info, give me a shout.

Re: The West Highland Way... Backwards?

it CAN'T be 900 m extra ascent

I know, but I've plotted a few times and the figures come out roughly the same.
It messes with my head.

Re: The West Highland Way... Backwards?

I've walked and cycled the WHW from north to south and there's something like an extra 900m of ascent over the whole thing when I plotted it out?! I like doing it this way though, coming up from Kinlochleven you get a wow moment when the Buachaille comes into view. Hoping to go again before the midg...

Re: Kid's Gear Review

Good comments folks. Had a lot of good feedback about the kids gear review so I'm going to look at putting together another one and maybe try to cover some camping gear in there as well, kids sleeping bags aren't always just scaled down versions of the adult bags.

Re: Hiking watches

I have a Garmin Fenix which is a few years old now, has been a through two hot washes in the machine and is still doing well. I don't take it into the hills any more, battery lasts only a couple of days with regular GPS use so I went back to a regular-style mountain watch without electronics but the...

Re: Scottish Government approves Lomond camping ban

Yes, but it's one of those laws that's easy to break without getting caught. If the police made it a priority they could find themselves explaining why they missed the target response time for a domestic abuse callout while a dozen officers were checking for litter at Firkin Point. Absolutely. How ...

Kid's Gear Review

Hi Folks. This month's review is up here http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/news/outdoor-gear-for-kids-review/0014374/ Kid's gear is something I take seriously and it's something I'm very aware that has a financial worry attached to it. I've touched on that in the review and I also did a quick look arou...

Re: Scottish Government approves Lomond camping ban

Currently there are plans for a large campsite at Balloch up for approval. The backpacker in me is glad that finally visiting folks will have somewhere to pitch a tent, the cynic in me sees the bylaws as conveniently moving people elsewhere and funneling money into someone's pocket. West Loch Lomond...

Re: Hooded Fleece Review

That describes the exact opposite of a hood to me :) Hoods don't move with your head because they're fixed at the neck, whereas a hat moves exactly where my head is. So what do you mean by "done well" and why have I never encountered such a hood? If a hood is well designed on a fleece it'...

Re: Do I need winter boots?

I rarely wear "proper" winter boots, my feet don't like it these days after years of rigid winter climbing boots. You have to adapt your approach as softer boots don't take the stiffest crampons and kicking into hard snow isn't so easy, but these days warm and comfortable feet win every ti...

Re: Personal Locator Beacons

I did the first UK review of the first generation SPoT and it was a revelation being able to send messages home via satellite. I often do solo overnighters and the "I am here" button was as useful as "Send Help!". I think any of these devices can be good, and phone signal are get...

Hooded Fleece Review

After the comments on last years midlayers I wanted to have look at more regular fleeces and the review is up here http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/news/gear-test-hooded-fleece/0014092/ Hooded fleeces are one of my all-time favourites, and that really does go back 25ish years to the first Karrimor Alp...

Re: Vegetarian Mountain Boots

I didn't put it into the review text but some of the models in the current trail shoe review are vegan friendly.
If there's anything like that in the upcoming boot review I'll flag it up.
