Re: Winter weather on the way

Well, my heart goes out to those poor souls in Londontown who, apparently, are going to get hit by five whole days of snow. I am considering hiring a van and sending down such things as feather duvets, artisan bread, olives and sun-dried tomatoes to lessen their suffering. Do you think they might or...

Changing my password

Sorry if I am being a bit dim here... A while ago I forgot my password (seriously, my memory for these things is awful) so I asked for a new one. I got sent one, which is a string of totally random letters and numbers. I have searched and searched for how to change it to something I might actually r...

Re: Walking Boots - am I over thinking things?

The best pair of walking boots I've had were - don't laugh - Hi-Tec. Got them from Go Outdoors about six years ago (boys' boots rather than women's - it's dead handy being a size 4), wore them to death, walked the West Highland Way in them without any blisters or sore feet. They eventually started l...

Re: Equipment for the WHW (in hostels and B&B) ?

Yep, most of the time you can still hear (and often actually see!) the road! It's hardly a wilderness, except for the East side of Loch Lomond....and then you can still see the cars across the watter!  We used a baggage carrier because we camped for much of it, so we had the tent / sleepi...

Re: Achilles heel pain in once comfortable boots?

I would definitely get to a doctor to get this checked out - Achilles tendon pain can sometimes be a sign of a change in the arches of the feet (or foot). I was getting quite severe Achilles pain earlier in the year that eventually showed its face as Plantar Fasciitus (Policeman's Heel) that was cau...

Re: Equipment for the WHW (in hostels and B&B) ?

Someone mentioned 'evening shoes' as when you take your boots off at the end of the day, you REALLY don't want to put them on again to walk to the shop / pub / whatever. I bought a pair of the neoprene 'swimming'/surfing shoes like these : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Aqua-Shoes-Adults-Childrens-Neoprene...

Re: John Muir Way - Helensburgh - Balloch - state of pathway

Wow, that's some improvement isn't it? Despite the Met Office claiming tomorrow was to be a complete wash-out; it was wonderful weather and this Stage 1 was a delight! Took it fairly easy because I'm not long discharged from physio and still rather conscious of the stress fracture but my old bones d...

John Muir Way - Helensburgh - Balloch - state of pathways?

Hey all! Hope you're all well. Haven't been around for a while, I succumbed to what my local hospital called a 'monumental balls-up of the knee' (medical term, apparently) a few months ago where I tore a hamstring, knackered my Pes Anserine, got bursitis AND managed to give myself a stress fraction ...

Re: Munro for beginners?

We did Ben Lomond as our first, with our (at the time) four year old and seven year old. We did it on a roasting hot day in July which was spectacular and not enormously busy (probably because it was so hot!), but busy enough that - if there was an accident, or if we'd needed help of some kind, some...

Re: Marine's body found up Clova.

Again, just echoing everyone else's thoughts and thanks to those who look out for us; and sending love and light to his family and all those who knew and loved him.

Re: Rucksacks

I tried on a shedload of fancy brand-name rucksacks (with weight in, that is a REALLY good tip!), and ended up with one of Go Outdoors' own brand ones (Hi-Gear?), it's fantastic. I'm very short with pretty narrow shoulders but good childbearing hips, and that was the problem - other rucksacks just w...

Re: West Highland Way 2015

Hi Foxy! I walked the WHW with a friend in early April this year. The plan HAD been to camp, but my friend was a total newbie to it all and couldn't really handle the thought of camping each and every night so we did a combination. We used Travel-Lite to transport our big packs, tent, sleeping bags ...
