Re: Asking for trouble

how does the rule in Scotland that a bicycle is an aid to pedestrianism sit with electrically assisted and totally electrically powered bikes. I’m not entirely sure what your question is. But ‘ebikes’ are EAPCs - electrically assisted pedal cycles. The max average power output is 250 watts, and the...

Re: Asking for trouble

I'm not there yet, but I don't agree. If an e-bike can help me out to Iron Lodge before my ageing legs get me out beyond that I'll go for it. Here’s a wee clip of me cycling from NH078294 back to Killilan via Iron Lodge. Wasn’t a great day so I was just checking out a possible route which I think w...

Re: Asking for trouble

Your last sentence comes across as elitist and is indicative of the sort of primitive tribal mentality I generally object too. Why shouldn't people who perhaps don't have the stamina they once did be allowed to enjoy our wild and beautiful places just because they might need an e-bike instead of a ...

Re: Asking for trouble

I think e-bikes don't belong on the hills because they're powered vehicles. OK, the point of pollution is at the source of generation not use. OK the devastation in the mining for batteries is in a foreign country. But they're an ecological menace and if you're not fit enough to cycle to Culra with...

Re: Liathach, how hard?

The first pinnacles can be / are bypassed on what appears to be the main path with no exposure. The first pinnacle depends on whether you go from East to West, or West to East. I was staying at the Youth Hostel in Torridon, so just walked round the corner, saw the wee marker cairn and headed up. So...

Re: Meindl boot equivalent

Just try on everything you can. However, if you struggle to find a boot that fits well then maybe seek out an Altberg stockist. Their standard last comes in half sizes and five widths, plus they do other lasts. Their AForme last has a narrow heal and wide forefoot which might suit you. Altberg boots...

Re: Strathfarrar

Cycled down the Glen and did the four Munros back on Thursday. Got the ebike through the side gate nae bother. Just waggled the bars one way then the other and through. I took my time, though didn’t dilly dally as much as I usually do. So took me about 10hrs plus cycle in and back out which was abou...

Re: Strathfarrar

There's a gap for bikes to pass but I had to lift my handlebars to get it through. Might have been shoddy technique on my part but definitely wasn't one you could just cycle through.

Presumably somehow I'll get my emtb bars thorugh - I hope.

Re: Strathfarrar

Cycled in and out, and would have got locked in if we couldn't have got the bikes past the gate. Help ma Boab! Oh no. Been thinking about this one. Was gonna deploy my new fangled ebike to get in and back out. I don’t like rushing my hills either. Thought there was a side gate for b...

Re: Deteroration of Quality of Gear

Similar here, got mine 2015 and had them resoled 2019, which in theory means they may be due another resole this year - I will need to check it was them that I slipped in and hurt my thumb, I'm not used to the soles wearing down before the rest of the boot/shoe has dropped to bits  I also wear...

Re: Deteroration of Quality of Gear

My Altberg Tetheras are around 8 and a half years old now, got them resoled at Altberg a few years back for a very reasonable £60. A previous pair of Scarpa Terra GTX, which were of slipper like comfort lasted 18 months before the vibram sole started disintegrating. Definitely not sure the words &q...

Re: Skye - Potholes

Not maintaining roads is not really a false economy because it externalises the costs and consequences onto drivers. Externalised costs do not appear on the balance sheet so they are encouraged. The way to make it a false economy is to have the means of claiming the cost of pothole related vehicle ...

Re: Skye - Potholes

Several factors such as weather, wear and tear from road traffic (particularly heavy road traffic) and poor maintenance contribute to pothole frequency and severity. Road surfaces can deteriorate rapidly after a lot of freeze/thaw weather during winter. The UK is one of the most traffic congested c...
