Re: Chalk Hill Blues and an Iron Age Hillfort

The small birds are wary of magpies, but they're generally able to coexist with them. Magpies tend to move quickly from place to place, so the small birds usually move out the way when the magpies visit, and then return when the magpies move off again.

Re: dark green fritillaries and a six spotted burnett

I saw the six-spotted burnetts for the first time a few weeks ago at Aberlady. There were thousands of them all over the reserve. I'm intrigued as to why they're "dreaded" as well. Incidentally, there were loads of dark green fritillaries as well as a lot of common blues. I was impressed b...

Re: Average speed cameras on the A9

There was talk of upgrading the railway and moving freight onto that - that could help make a difference if it ever happens.

Re: Memorial plaques

This may only be part of the answer about why you wouldn't want luxuriant growth of vegetation in the mountains, and is given as a general reason rather than specific to any particular mountain: many plants in the mountains are specialists living in often nutrient poor environments. Some of these pl...

Re: Flying dragons and an anuran bonus.

First golden ringed dragonfly I've seen. DSCF5283 small.jpg Nice photos. That dragonfly could be what I saw on Sunday in Glen Loin. I'm a bit of a beginner with dragonflies so can't be sure. I initially tagged them as female common hawker, but now I'm not too sure. These dragonflies were flying bac...

Re: Midge/Cleg Season

I was up Glen Loin on Sunday as was bitten for the first time by a cleg. I felt an itching on my wrist and looked down and saw it having a good long drink. The path was teeming with insects, many of which flew into me. Some common hawkers were there too - I hope they took their fair share of clegs!

Re: Office Job Depression

I hope you find a new direction to move in. I'm in a somewhat similar situation, although not as desperate to move on! I work full time in an office too, but I'm also studying Natural Sciences with the OU with the aim to get a job in a scientific area, hopefully, if my dreams come true, working in A...

Re: Three Zoos

Have a quick scan through these images - you can see they're quite a bit "redder" than the grey squirrel, but they're also smaller. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=red+s ... 80&bih=593 In winter they can have a more greyish coat, but I think the way they hold their tail and their siz...

Re: Raven-ous

I tend to take an objective view of animal behaviour - they are simply behaving the way they do because it aids their survival and helps them to reproduce. A raven eating another animal, even if the prey was still alive when the raven began eating, is just behaving the way it does because it's takin...

Yes, definitely a grey, no doubt about it. Couldn't be more of a grey squirrel if it tried! :)

Re: Raven-ous

seen too much of the horrible things eating deer/sheep that werent quite dead :( Stop putting human values on a bird. They do what they do and that's that. They're not wicked or evil or horrible, they're ravens. It's that kind of attitude that leads to animals being called vermin or pests and givin...

Re: Mystery bird

Where did you see the egret? They don't breed in Scotland, but we do get occasional visitors. Vane Farm (now Loch Leven) RSPB reserve had one coming back annually for a few years.

Re: Wild boar in Lochaber

I had no idea these were in Scotland. I know there's a well-known population in the south of England.
Are these genuine wild animals, or could they be captive animals that have got loose?
