The small birds are wary of magpies, but they're generally able to coexist with them. Magpies tend to move quickly from place to place, so the small birds usually move out the way when the magpies visit, and then return when the magpies move off again.

I was up Glen Loin on Sunday as was bitten for the first time by a cleg. I felt an itching on my wrist and looked down and saw it having a good long drink. The path was teeming with insects, many of which flew into me. Some common hawkers were there too - I hope they took their fair share of clegs!

Where did you see the egret? They don't breed in Scotland, but we do get occasional visitors. Vane Farm (now Loch Leven) RSPB reserve had one coming back annually for a few years.

I had no idea these were in Scotland. I know there's a well-known population in the south of England.
Are these genuine wild animals, or could they be captive animals that have got loose?
