Re: Livestock Loch Quioch

The route description for Squrr a Mhaoraich describes a stalkers' path. That implies the presence of deer in the area, given what stalkers' paths are for. Obviously, deer being wild animals are free to roam and are likely not to want to come within a mile of you and your dog anyway. I'm afraid I can...

Re: La sportiva ultra raptor 2.

I assume you mean these https://www.lasportiva.com/en/ultra-raptor-ii-man-black-46m999100 They look to me like they're designed for trail running rather than hillwalking. From the sound of it, the sole is soft to make it more comfortable, but that means it's less durable. Whether that's a problem is...

Re: Eriskay - can you get there by public transport with a d

I didn't actually say it was the dog's fault. My point is that different people can have different views of the same situation. To some people, it's frustrating that they can't take their dog with them on some buses; other people other quite happy at not being cooped up in a metal box with someone e...

Re: Eriskay - can you get there by public transport with a d

I can see both sides to the dogs on public transport issue. I have friends who are allergic to dogs, and being cooped up in a confined space with dogs can cause them breathing difficulties. You think your dog is being friendly and coming to say hello. I think he's unhygienic and I'd rather not be li...

Re: Mountain Rescue insurance necessary?

In the UK, Mountain Rescue is staffed entirely by volunteers who do not charge for their time. It is co-ordinated by the police, and helicopters are operated under contract to the Coastguard, who are both taxpayer funded and therefore do not directly charge the end users of their emergency services....

Re: Camping on or near Schellion, mount Keen or Meall Chuaic

I assume you mean wild camping. If that's the case, then I'm sure you'll be able to find somewhere to pitch your tents. People are unlikely to share precise locations on a forum such as this because the whole point of wild camping is to be away from other people and if you start telling the world wh...

Re: Loch Lomond and Cowal Way with kids

Not done either of these myself, but I would have thought the West Highland Way might be the more obvious choice for a first walking trip in Scotland. It's moderately awkward to get to the start of the Lomond and Cowal way, and it is a bit off the beaten track. West Highland Way is busier, and you'v...

Re: Mindless vandalism

@al78 you got any evidence for that? Given that it apparently happened between 2am and 3am, I suspect it was the work of someone who lived locally. I can think of various possible motives other than being "an entitled motorist who objects to having to pay for anything", although without kn...

Re: Interesting, but will it ever happen

Given the Scottish government's track record on delivering infrastructure projects, I think I'm going to vote for "not going to happen, unfortunately".

Re: Recommendations for Liner Socks

One thing to remember is that most boots and shoes are manufactured in European sizes, and then converted to a UK size. This means that it's entirely possible that you actually are a UK size 11, but that the conversion is a bit off because UK and European sizes aren't exactly equivalent. Maybe the b...

Re: Resoling Alt-Bergs

I saw the tip somewhere to measure the tread with the edge of a pound coin. If the tread is shallower than that, it's time to consider re-soling.

Re: The silliest sign you've seen on a walk?

I remember seeing one by a bridge over the railway at Crianlarich which gave a weight limit of 3 tons or something, and thought it was optimistic to get any vehicle through the field and over the bridge. There was also a weirdly specific speed limit sign at Cruachan dam. I think it said something li...

Re: You support masts in wild land (allegedly)

@skyelines I think the reason why they want 4G to (nearly) all rural properties is because they want to switch off the old telephone network based on copper cables and replace it with fibre optic. In many rural areas it's prohibitively expensive to install fibre optic so you'll either have people di...

Re: Needing help with routing 523 mile walk for fundraising

Another option to add some distance (coordination with ferries required) would be Great Glen Way/West Highland Way as far as Balmaha, then get across to Balloch and take Three Lochs way to Helensburgh and up to Tarbert, then Cowal way. Ferries then required to get to Lochranza on Arran. There's then...
