Re: Ice free summits?

Ben Lomond: Located near Loch Lomond, Ben Lomond is one of the most popular Munros and offers a relatively straightforward ascent with well-defined paths. Well trodden paths can mean more compacted snow and therefore more persistent ice. I don't know what the weather's been like down that way in th...

Re: Ungritted roads advice

I would also say that locals tend to have both winter/all-season tyres and knowledge of 'iffy' spots.

Re: Oh Dear...

I stand corrected - an AALA license is only a legal requirement if working with under 18s. If someone not appropriately qualified were to describe themselves as a mountaineering instructor or a mountain guide then the Association of Mountaineering Instructors or British Mountain Guides might take a...

If someone not appropriately qualified were to describe themselves as a mountaineering instructor or a mountain guide then the Association of Mountaineering Instructors or British Mountain Guides might take an interest, and it's possible they might have a case under laws relating to advertising. We can bleat about it, but these things cost money, and as most councils are in huge debt, they ain't paying for it over the likes of social care.

Re: The Highlands don't need or want parking charges!

Some folk have mentioned a "tourist tax" totally against this as accomodation providers increase prices due to seasons, events taking place etc so why pay even more when they are raising more tax for government in the first place. Last year in Dundee a music event took place and prices fo...

Re: The Highlands don't need or want parking charges!

The charges themselves are not the main issue. That said, as a local I'll go elsewhere in preference to paying out £5 to go for a run round the Loch. There's a serious safety issue with the current proposals. FWIW, I objected and will continue to object until a more sensible solution is found. Agre...

Re: The Highlands don't need or want parking charges!

I agree in general as long as the local authorities don't then start extracting the urine by raising, raising, raising, raising and then raising the charges some more, followed by claims they can't afford to repair the dreadful road surfaces. Roads cost more than any tourist levy or parking fee wil...

Re: Oh Dear...

I stand by my comments. I don’t consider either person involved in this incident to be any sort of expert. As the op noted, the person in the photo is walking through the snow using walking poles! Wow. Here is another ML (Summer and Winter) using poles in the snow. How terribly innapropriate. https...

Re: Oh Dear...

I have to agree. If you read his credentials online you’ll see neither of them are qualified winter mountain leaders. They’re certainly not experts. While we may have some loftier ideas, someone who is Summer ML and Winter ML trained is 'expert' to most on the hills. Sounds like a close escape on a...

Re: The Highlands don't need or want parking charges!

How is the goon in the hi viz Let us not become rude about people just doing their job. I agree though, there is a lot of nuance and complexity around these things, and I am not sure everything is fully thought through. I am, on balance, in favour of looking to have a modest 'tourist tax' of some k...

Re: Walking the length of the Tay

It is fun in a canoe. 8)

We did Crianlarich to Newport on Tay over a few days with my old staff. Cracking trip.
Killin to Perth is regularly done.
