Re: Walking (not just climbing) in the latest B2/B3 boots

I had a pair of sportiva baturas which were very comfortable for a B3 boot and pretty light. Warm enough for me in winter even on belays with only a pair of socks. You're a tougher man than me... I wouldn't fancy standing around in just boots and socks. Call me a traditionalist, but I'd probably st...

Re: Walking (not just climbing) in the latest B2/B3 boots

Another update for anyone interested! The Salewa's worked like magic over the winter and although I haven't had them on over the warmer summer (if such a thing exists here!) I'm actually going to opt for them for my next outing on Aonach Eagach. I want something that will give me more confidence and...

Re: Rucksack which one

Winter or summer? On your own or in a group? I like to have a larger rucksack (50l which can take about 70l just) although it packs in tight when it's only 25% full. I can also strip mine back to well under a kilo. But then I also have a drysack with no waist strap which is a few hundred grams. But ...

Re: OS Map Subscriptions

I use it to print off the maps - I find it easier to align sections than with Bing. And you can upload your GPX route to it and overlay onto the OS map. Not a massive draw if you're just following a WH route or similar but if you have sketched out your own route it can be quite handy. I think the pr...

Re: Been walking? No trip report but want to share some Phot

Rather embarrassingly, I'm only just getting around to sorting out some photos from our early summer Skye trip  Our wild camp spot was pretty well chosen, I thought... although our incursion almost certainly spoiled the scenery! https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1630/24620191455_5499f89e5c_c.jpg...

Re: Rucksacks ?

I can't recommend this highly enough after buying one a few weeks ago: https://www.podsacs.com/i/q/CCPA50/pod-alpine-50-back-pack Normal price is £145 but they're doing it for £50 less a penny at the moment (worth paying £3 for the waterproof cover to get the free postage for > £50 orders...) I've m...

Re: Loch Ossian two day winter expedition

Great report, planning this year to make the train journey to Corrour and have a go at these hills! Thanks, glad you enjoyed the read. It's a cracking spot up there although I wouldn't recommend the station on a cold winter's evening... All three would be manageable in a single day if you're fast, ...

Re: Photography Tips

My top tip would be to think about what photography actually means: "drawing with light". The key part of that is light. The tools you use to "draw" are way down the pecking order compared with the quality of the light you're actually capturing. 1. Get out in the golden hours (ei...

Re: The Ptarmigan Ridge - an evenings adventure in the dark

Some truly exceptional photos on your Flickr pages - and that middle one above is very cool! The effort in taking camera gear up the hill and stopping to use it can be worthwhile!!

Re: Absolute beginner

We have a four year old and he spends a huge amount of time with his 7 and 8 year old cousins, so have some relevant experience which might be helpful. The biggest challenge you'll face is that the stamina (and interest / attention span) of a 4 year old vs an 8 year old are leagues apart. The trick ...

Re: For Sale - TSL Excursion Snow Shoes.

Hi Kinlossrich

I would be in the market for the 305s but also only at £50 if that's acceptable to you?

Possible Glenshee trip Sun 24th Jan

Weekend isn't looking to clever, but it appears Glenshee may benefit from some morning reasonableness on Sunday... I'm thinking about driving from Inverclyde to the Glenshee car park and doing something there (possibly the Cairnwell trio). I'd want to be done by midday-ish though, so it'll be an ear...

Re: Winter Munro thoughts....

kaye.cantlay wrote:pjm - I do ski, but have never tried ski touring.

I climbed Ben Macdui yesterday and there were loads of people ski-touring - seemingly effortlessly up to the top - compared to me anyway.

Re: Winter Munro thoughts....

Bit of a random thought - do you ski? You could hire some touring skis to do the flat bits in and out of some of the longer ones?
