Re: Proof of the Earth's curvature on Ben Klibreck!(?)

Nah - once you get past the elephants it's turtles all the way down.

Calmac's fleet problems are actually because they keep dropping off the edge out there - Fergusons have actually churned out 8 ferries in the last 6 years.

Also...why do I never have enough tin foil for my baked potatoes?

Re: Mindless vandalism

May or may not be mindless. Perhaps someone heard the call to arms to fight back against one of the great scourges of modernity - parking charges - and took matters into their own hands. Radicalised to stride out into the night and take direct action against the evil creeping north from the ...

Re: You support masts in wild land (allegedly)

By going out into a remote area like this you voluntarily accepted the risk that, in the event of an accident, help would be delayed. You have no cause for complaint. If you do feel that you require instant access to emergency help while out on the hills than could I suggest that you stick to more ...

Re: "Western" photography project

There are "Guess Where" Facebook pages dedicated to identifying places in Scotland as well. Possibly better if you have urban scenes.

Re: Mull cycle times

Hi all, looking to do Ben More on Mull this year and wanted to know how long the cycle ride in is to the start for Ben More , cheers Google maps has a function (directions) that allows you to get a distance and estimated time for your choice of walking, cycling, driving, public transport between 2 ...

Re: Ben Cleugh. Seems I've bagged it twice.

Think there are 23 Grahams and 7 Corbetts which are also Donalds. Grahams and Corbetts are national lists of P150ish (see above), Donalds are a regional (Lowland only) list of P30ish, Donald Tops are a regional (Lowland only) list of P15ish. So most of the Donalds lack the prominence to make it into...

Re: Asking for trouble

I've seen bikes almost totally eliminated by e-bikes for food delivery in Edinburgh, incidentally making the roads less safe for everyone. Intuitively likely, but as someone interested in the facts I'll say citation required on that, not heard any data to back up the assertion. As always, plenty of...

Re: Technology and do I need to be careful?

Oh and you should reflect on your wise words in the last paragraph and perhaps put them into practice. My preferences and experiences are valid too. Keep the clichés coming, I haven't ever downloaded a .gpx route myself. This is one of those things you see commonly on hillwalking discussions - peop...

Re: Technology and do I need to be careful?

Nothing to stop anyone recreating the process by cutting out a small window in some card and reading the map through that. The macular area of vision you read with is tiny - a paper map is read by roving that area with the ocular muscles across text/data giving a seemingly seamless reading experien...

Re: Technology and do I need to be careful?

Also it is really hard to read a screen map over a large area, they are much harder for planning longer routes. Obviously not a problem if you are really happy following other peoples routes. Paper maps make good evening reading material too. (assuming battery conservation and signal issues in the ...

Re: Technology and do I need to be careful?

Well, this recent study published in Nature found that "people with greater lifetime GPS experience have worse spatial memory ... when they are required to navigate without GPS". To be fair, they were studying drivers not hill-walkers... I don't use digital mapping, but not because I'm wo...

Re: Long distance walking - what's the equivalent of a munro

I'm not sure that the Munros are a definitive list of the best hills in Scotland. Trust your feelings - it is not. It is simply a list of hills in Scotland over 3000ft, which happens to contain a number of the best hills in Scotland (but anyone who says all of them is most likely to be rather ignor...

Re: Left behind and thrown away rubbish.

I object to the posts in here attacking motorists, mostly from one contributor obviously working off some grievance or other. Given that motoring is so ubiquitous with motorists from all walks of life, socioeconomic groupings, faiths, genders, ethnicities it always surprises me that some people fee...
